Turn off main water while away for a month

Hello,

We have a hot water base board heating and gas water heater in our house in NJ. We will be out for 1 month in Jan and I was wondering if I should turn off the main water supply. 2 years back, I did not do that and left the thermostat at 62 and during a particularly cold spell, a pipe burst so now I am very wary.

Should I just leave the thermostat at 72 and keep the faucets dripping? Am worried if the furnace malfunctions it can be a problem. It has happened before where the pilot went out because of bad thermostat, fortunately we were at home and I could replace it. I don't know if the main water valve really fully shuts or it still lets in some water. Is it safe to shut off the main with base board water heating? What do I need to do with hot water heater and the baseboard furnace if I decide to shut water mains.

Thanks
