Do rainbarrels make sense here?
Comments (13)I live in PDX and have a "dinky 65 gal. under the spout" rain barrel. ;^) I got it late this winter (yay BD!). While I totally get what you're saying about our weather we did have a good rain this weekend that filled it back up. I know this will become more of a rare occurrence especially after the fifth of July when we really start to warm up but I've found that so far it does have other benefits. When the barrel is empty and there's no chance of rain coming, I take the hose and fill it back up using the mist setting on the nozzle. This mists out the chlorine in the water making it more palatable to plants. Also the water that comes out of the hose is *freezing* filling the RB and leaving the water in there helps to warm it up, also making it nicer for the plants. I'd prefer to not shock my plants with cold hose water. Plus that's a couple hundred gallons of water that don't go into my sewer line that I'd have to pay for. I think there's also a discount you can get with the city for disconnecting your downspouts... I haven't contacted the city yet because I'm planning on getting two more for the other downspouts later this year and want to do it all at once. BTW you can make your own rain barrel for about $30 - search Craig's List for food grade barrels, you can sometimes pick them up for as little as $20....See MoreDoes this grab bar idea make sense?
Comments (2)Beth, It sounds like you are converting the bathtub to just a shower. I have MS and we did the same thing. Our configuration is a little different. The short front wall has the shower controls and the hand held on a sliding bar, Grohe Relexa Plus bar, with a Grohe Movario hand held. The 12-inch vertical grab bar, Mfg. Ginger, is also on that wall. The shower hose is in the same place as the old shower was located  no plumbing to move. The shower bar is almost as high so that when the hand held is up in its highest position it is just about the height of a regular shower- this combined with the extension (and flexibility) of the Movario makes it as convenient as a regular shower for my husband. A six foot hose should be more than adequate. Mine is 5 ft and that is just fine. I know some will tell you to place the longer grab bar on a diagonal. This is really not recommended. Wet hands may slip, and much better leverage is obtained by placing it horizontally. My bar, placed on the long wall, next to my shower chair, is 18 inches and that is sufficient for me. As far as height- what ever is convenient for your Mom. Mine is at about wrist height when I am standing. Pam...See MoreDoes this quote for exterior painting make sense?
Comments (1)It depends on the paint. An acrylic stain costs me $24-$32 per gallon. Good exterior paints rarely cost under $30 though. Brick can be painted without primer, but I would use one. As I have always said, a painter that basically says 'I don't care what paint I use' I always have to question. A good painter knows what he likes to use and pretty much will insist on using it....See MoreRanch remodel/addition Does it make sense to move walls?
Comments (19)Judy G did you find "track home?" Like so many words ending in "ct," the word "tract" often gets butchered. I won't even tell you how much "Duck Tape" gets my goat! When I learned that a company actually named theirs that, I was quite discouraged that we would ever get duct tape pronounced correctly. Everyone does it, so don't feel I am picking on you, Samantha. I like Rinq's ideas. But since you cannot move the bedroom wall to the left, you just move it toward the back. Notice that the dining room has moved entirely to be behind the kitchen, so the dining area is now part of the living room. It makes that room bigger without moving the plumbing, That saves a ton over moving the living room into where the bathrooms are. The only possible problem with this plan is that the garage walk-though door is now in the laundry. It may be that you need it, by code, to go into the garage. Is there going to be another door from the house into the garage in your plan, Rinq? I see a little bit of space in the hall between the door to the half-bath and the wall to the garage where a shallow pantry cabinet can go. I had 12" deep ones in my last hose and they held a lot....See Morerockybird
