Removing old backsplash mastic/tset. Prep for new tile. Help!
Comments (6)In otherwords can I build up the thinset that much in the old wallpaper areas where I flat trowel it on? What you can do is first remove any wallpaper. If you don't, you'll see your tile come back down, most likely before you're even done grouting. Secondly, use a long trowel-- 13 or 14", and you can first trowel on the old thinset areas to flatten them out, and then use the long rowel to feather thinset from those areas down to nothing above them. Then nobody don see NODDING!! :-) Any problem with the thinset going over the torn wallboard areas? The only torn wallboard areas I saw were only down to the brown paper underneath. If that's the worst of it, or maybe a few small areas down to the gypsum, that would be fine to go over. If you have any areas much bigger than a quarter down to the gypsum, though, you might want to patch the wallboard where needed....See MorePossible to remove counter but keep backsplash?
Comments (1)My tile installer said that it is possible to remove just one tile and replace it. I assume, therefore, that you could remove one row of tile if you had to in the case that removal of the counter top damaged a bit of your back splash. Just guessing, though....See MorePot filler w/ this backsplash too busy? Slab or tile backsplash?
Comments (9)Hi Katie, Demo starts tomorrow, so no pics on progress yet, but I'll post when I have some. I'm working a little bit with a KD, and doing the rest myself with cabinetmaker. KD suggested open shelving like in the inspiration pic (but in stainless, specifically). I think it would stress me out though, lol! Having all of my bottles and stuff right out there (the range area is the focal point to basically my whole downstairs living area). My pantry rarely looks fabulous, and I'd be moving the pantry out into the open. So, I think we'll be making the vertical column things on either side of the mantel style range area into pull-out shelves for sheet pans, spices, small bottles, etc. I considered the open shelving with a pretty display of white bowls and dishes, but then I'd lose the storage space for the stuff I really need at my fingertips. Feel free to email me, too, if you want to exchange more ideas. It's a fun process!...See MorePreparing drywall (after removing old backsplash) for new backsplash
Comments (3)I'm not a professional and it depends on the size of the area to be repaired, but it's pretty easy to cut out damaged dry wall and then mud the patch seams. You want to do whatever will maximize the clean, level surface. And, yes, you will need to feather and sand your mud until it is dead level. I wouldn't paint the mudded, repaired drywall before tiling, at least, I never have. And I've never primed drywall before mudding it. If you've only read or watched videos, be sure you practice. If your repair area is large, even if just 'paper', maybe hire somebody?...See MoreBunny
