Root Gall- did I do the right thing?

Recently I've been moving certain lucky roses out of their pots and into the ground. Pope John Paul II seemed like an ideal candidate; he hasnt looked that good lately, and he is already in a pot large enough to make it awkward moving it around. Plus I had a planned scheme of pink white pink and the ideal spot in mind. Having dug the holes and put in the first pink I maneuvered PJ out of his pot, and started trimming because he was a little rootbound down the bottom. Anyway I found a giant gall on one of the roots- I guess thats why he had been looking a bit off colour... but then I sort of panicked ( the thought I could have infected a brand new bed with gall threw me a bit) and decided just to throw him out.

That was yesterday..he is still in the bin...any possibility of being able to do surgery and saving him? Of course I would repot him afterward...
