Low voltage transformer

We have Westinghouse low voltage LED lights in our garden. The transformer has died and it's only a couple months old. We had a couple of days of rain and when I brought the transformer in the house water came out of it. It was mounted two feet high on a post and the instructions said a minimum of eighteen inches. Is there any reason why I can't use any other manufacturer's 12 volt transformer? Obviously it needs to have a wattage rating large enough for the existing number of lights (the Westinghouse transformer was 70 watts). The lights said to use with a Westinghouse transformer but I would think that 12 volt DC output is 12 volt DC output.
