door mount spice racks for larger items?

Hi all, I am looking at cabinet door mounted spice racks. I would love to be able to put my costco-sized vitamin bottles and spices in these, maybe canned goods too.
Would this be too heavy to mount on a cabinet door?
If you have done this, any particular ones you can recommend?

this revashelf one is nice and adjustable, but only fits 2.25" standard sized spice bottles. I need something for least 3.25" bottles.

I also considered the ikea bekvam spice racks, which are wonderful, and at such a great price, but alas, at 15.75" long, they are too long for my 13" cabinet door.

I made my own door-mounted spice rack, and originally wanted deeper shelves like you do. After figuring out the dimensions required, I decided against it. If you go with deeper shelves, the overall unit has to be less wide to provide clearance when opening and closing. If your door is only 13" wide, you are going to end up with a very narrow unit. Also, the cabinet's internal shelves will need to be cut back more. I decided to keep the spice rack shallow to allow more width, and just refill the smaller bottles as needed. We do have space for some oversize bottles in an adjacent cabinet.

Having one-deep spice storage is fantastic. What used to be a frustrating search process, pulling many bottles out of the old cabinet, is now easy.

thanks DIY2Much2Do! yes, I agree, the spice rack will be pretty narrow on my narrow door. my cabinet is a little deeper than normal though, at 16" deep, so i thought it would be ok to give up a few inches of interior space for having some things readily at hand on the door.

I just want it for all my vitamin bottles, bandaids, etc. (currently living on my kitchen island). i had tried keeping all in a basket inside the cabinet before, but it was still a bit of a chore to rifle through it all to find a bandaid or aspirin when you really need it. And then, I found my lack of organization was causing me to not take vitamins because it was too much effort to get them, lol. My early new year's resolution was to get more organized and reduce my counter clutter.

I would love to see your DIY spice racks! it sounds like a great project!

Oh FYI to anyone looking at this thread, I found this revashelf storage tray that I think will work. It is a bit deeper than their spice rack and looks nice to boot. It comes in 3 sizes too. I ordered one and am now awaiting its arrival. I will update everybody if it works out!

I love my pull outs on either side of my cooktop. I keep seasonings for cooking on the right one and all my baking spices on the left. The baking zone is to the left of the cooking and it is very handy. There are deep drawers to the left of my baking spices. One holds my canisters of flour and sugar along with my big food processor and many measuring cups. The one under that holds mixing bowls, rolling pins and all my other misc. gadgets. My big KA sits on the counter in the corner, always ready for action. The pullouts were made by my cabinet maker. They are adjustable, full extension, soft close and like the insides of all my cabinets are lined with easy to clean melamine. About the third or fourth time I used this set up, I had one of those pure, joyful moments, realizing how much easier and faster it was to make something. It's fun not work any more. Nancy

I had a spice pull-out on my upper cabinets in my old kitchen, and it wasn't useful. The main problem was that a pull out that high was hard to see. It would have been much easier to see into a cabinet by either climbing on a cabinet or stool. The problem with a pull out at that height is that you can't see the top shelves very easily. This is hard for me to describe, but do a mock up of it and I think you'll get it. That said, I would not to let 4.5 in. go to waste in a small kitchen. You may get more use out of a regular door (rather than the rack.) That would still allow you to put spices inside or anything else. The benefit of a door rather than a pull out is that once you get to eye-level (by climbing on something!) you can see in quite easily. You could also shelves to create a vertical cabinet for a few trays. You'd be surprised at how much you can store in a small space.

I use a lazy susan from Rubber Maid purchased back in the Pleistocene era that I keep in a cabinet away from the stove. Certain things are kept in the refrigerator. Everything is dated when purchased, and every 2 years I go through it all and through out what is old, unless I taste it and it tastes good. I do love to save those little bottles. They are great for making your own spice blends, sorting buttons of different colors, screws of different sizes, making your own spice blends. My mother used to keep her spare buttons in beautiful cake tins. Remember when people gave you gifts of cake in beautiful colored aluminum cake tins or beautiful boxes that looked like hat boxes? Well, they were our repository for buttons. It made it a treat to hunt down that special button for mom. Too bad those days are gone! The tiny jars from jam samples are good for storing those tiny quantities of saffron that might come in a cellophane packet. Or craft supplies. Who said recycling is a new thing?

Yes lots of those clever projects online that are impractical and time consuming. One of my big regrets of my now 15 year old kitchen remodel was not getting a special spice upper wall cabinet with doors that had substantial wooden racks built-in that really held the spice jars so they stayed in the rack when the doors were opened. And more storage inside!

Hello michoumonster,

Good luck with your decluttering and organization. That rack you found looks good. The curved sides will help with clearance. I’d just be careful with the screw lengths if you have a thin center panel like I do.

I have the same issue with forgetting vitamins since they are out of sight. My spouse and I joke that one of our goals as we age, is to stay healthy enough that the centerpiece of our kitchen table isn’t a lazy susan full of prescriptions. That seems to be the case for a lot of our relatives.

Here’s my DIY spice rack, which holds 40 bottles. It’s a 22” wide x 39” tall cabinet. The internal shelves are cut back 3”.
