Living Christmas Tree project (R.YEW.Crazy?)
Comments (30)Et Voila! Our lady is in her new home! Moved & planted her yesterday! 1/5/13 1. Dug out 4" of snow to uncover hole and work area. 2. Moved tree & the saved soil & tools to work area. 3. Popped out mulch from pre-dug target hole. 4. Fought to free tree from container (frozen 1" of soil). 5. Cut away burlap, plunked her in, covered with soil, potting mix, a little mulch. 6. Watered thoroughly. I had "hardened" or acclimatized the tree to cold temps with 4 nights in the barn. It had been below freezing, but at least not windy in the barn. Top inch of soil in the container had frozen, so difficult to free tree from container, but elbow grease and patience won in end. I probably second-guessed the location of the hole a few times, but too late. She looks great where she is. Needles still green, moist. This tree looks like it never moved anywhere. She has a stockade fence on her windy side, so that'll help protect her. I have her lashed to the fence for a little first season support, too. Looks much smaller in the yard than in the house! But would be an expensive purchase at the nursery if I bought a new one this size. [Hit the project link below to see all the pictures.] Payoff: Feels fantastic not to be throwing out a dried out old pine on top of the pine & tinsel remains at the Town Dump. We can look at that tree next summer and know it had a star atop it on Dec 25. I very much appreciate your excellent tips that gave me confidence to proceed on this adventure. I'll update when I see new growth in the spring. Meanwhile feel free to add in any more tips as to care, feeding, nurturing of a conifer such as this. Comments (9)I had both ;) my first wedding was a huge shindig with many many bridesmaids, 200 guests, gorgeous location, catered dinner, special cake, two bands.... etc.... My second wedding was a very intimate affair, 20 guests, all family except for my best friend and his best friend. If I were to get married again, I'd elope. Come back and throw the party after, without all the stress. It's YOUR day. If you think you might regret not having a big wedding, have the big wedding. Remember that you will not be able to fully enjoy it because your bridesmaid will be crying because she's not your maid of honor, your groomsmen will drunkenly flirt with your sister, your mother will be mad because the flowers didn't show up, your husband will be stressed and frazzled because you are, you will have to "glad-hand" so much it won't be about you and your new DH it will be about Aunt Sally who has a shellfish allergy and has to be rushed to ER... you get the point. A wedding is a poor excuse for a party. DON'T forgo a wedding if that's what you really want. You can't go back and do it again. Even if you do "do it again" like me :) This is it. But, if I were you, having gone through what I did and done it two different ways, I'd get married, small ceremony, and have a nice party later for all of your friends. You'll be more relaxed and you'll have more fun. JMO. Congratulations!!!!...See MoreMy crazy dog, Leroy, ate my Christmas goodies!
Comments (14)Earlier this week I went to the supermarket and bought all the chocolate goodies .... 3 boxes of chocolates, 5 boxes of scorched almonds, 3 bags of choc coins and one box of After Eight mints. I hid them in a big box (crockpot size) on a low shelf in the pantry ... bad move! DH came home Tues night and found gold foil from the bags of coins all over the floor! I put a heavy weight on top of the box and felt secure in the knowlegde that she couldn't possibly move the weight, lift the box lid and cause any more havoc ... wrong move! While we were at work yesterday she had herself another little party! DS got home first and text me to say there was scorched almonds, after dinner mints and a huge amount of confetti sized cardboard packaging all over the kitchen floor!!!! I don't think she's actually consumed alot of the chocolate (luckily!) but she's torn alot of the packaging - two of her favourite passtimes has always been shredding cardboard and dis-embowling soft toys! Now that box is up on the HIGHEST shelf in the pantry with what remains of the goodies! And I have to brave the supermarket again to replace what's gone .... GRRRR!...See MoreAm I crazy or is possible Christmas LED lights are making tree grow?
Comments (0)So I almost killed my Orange tree a few weeks ago due to me not being able to water it and a growth light being on 24/7 for about 3 weeks (amazon plug malfunctioned). The tree dropped all of its leaves and I thought it was almost dead. I still watered it and left it for dead. I decided since it had no leaves to turn on the Christmas lights on it and within a few days as a joke and I noticed the thing started to put flowers (yes in the middle of winter.) So I was like ok...then started to cut the little oranges that would grow into oranges (to re-route energy to green growth) thinking if it was putting flowers then for sure it wasn’t dead. I decided to trim the thing agressively thinking worst thing it can happen is the tree die. Within a week the tree was full of new green growth shooting leaves and branches (don’t know how you call them) everywhere. Do you think the christmas lights have something to do with it? They are the cheap led kind - blue, green, red - or am I just crazy? Thing is the tree is growing like mad even way more than it has ever grown on summer even full sun. The growth light I use it only for winter survival practically since its small (Spider Farmer 1000) and I only use it for around 5 hours at night so it can’t be the one making the tree grow. I know it may sound like exageration but the whole house smell like perfume now from all the flowers it keeps putting everyday....See Morecupofkindnessgw
