What do I do when contractor doesn't show up?
Comments (9)We signed a simple contract (no fancy company form) with a plumber. They did not show up, nor called until I called them. They said they will show up some other day, not sure when. A long story short - they rescheduled, but seemed uncooperative after I wanted a county inspector to inspect their work (after they would be done in the future) and after I asked them to pull a work permit. They seem not to be licensed with Residential Builder's Commission. Now they told me I must wait nearly 2 months to get my money back as they say they already bought the materials for the advance payment that I paid them. I said it's ok to refund part money and part materials for the job, but they still unhappy and they now told me the plumber went to a hospital for 1 month. I think they are liars and they just trying to keep my oney, but they don't realize how big of the trouble they got themselves into since I'm gonna file a complaint of unlicensed contractor to the State Investigations and Enforcement commission etc. I guess I hit the scammers yet again... but I know what to do: report them, they get fined, cease and desist and prison time, then sue them in Small Claims Court and go to the end until their property gets sold and I get compensated. The money they got from me is over $1000 (for buying materials). I also will write and post my story in the forums and on a blog, so their plumbing company gets really damaged and hopefully they will not get much business anymore. Once I go after someone, it's for life. Any additional suggestions or experiences?...See MoreHelp - poor grout job by contractor? And what next?
Comments (16)How does this happen. Grouting is not rocket science. Well, if they didn't follow instructions for the grout it could mean soft grout but this is just a bad cleanup and grout job regardless of whether the grout was mixed properly or not. Even if it wasn't mixed properly, if the guy had any sense of pride he would've done a way better cleanup job. But I guess it just goes to show his personal standards. The thing with "performance" grout these days is that they are no where like the good old Portland cement grout back in the day, which cured rock hard and wasn't as finicky when it came to mixing. These days these grouts have all kinds of additives, colours, and other technology which could all be affected by mixing ratios and times. If the tiler isn't looking at the instructions and mixing the grout the same as the old school cement grout it can lead to issues like pinholes and crumbling. They really don't make things like they used to, nor do trades people have the same attention to detail and pride in their work. I know there are still people who are really good at what they do and have pride in their work, but those are rare these days....See Morehide your valuables when having reno work
Comments (34)I am so sorry you had this experience. Things like this leave one feeling violated. I don't think it matters how friendly you may be with the crew, stuff happens. I try to be as nice as possible when people are here working, making coffee, handing out cokes or water, even baking cookies at times. Yet, I have been hit several times. It's very upsetting. I have had a large antique china punch bowl stolen, various tools, plus dozens of bottles of champagne that my cousin had packed away in boxes I was storing for her - she's still mad at me and holds it against me that her bottles were stolen. It's amazing how invasive some workmen can be when they want to steal something, because everything stolen was buried deep in boxes, not out on display. We didn't discover the thefts until long after they were gone. It was sickening. Who knows what else was taken as so much is still packed away. I am about to have a lot more work done here and am worried about how to protect what I have. Believe it or not, last time I actually hid our silver under the floorboards - we have wide board floors and some were loose in a closet. Obviously, that's where I should have put the champagne. But, I never would have guessed anyone would have taken the big bowl which had been a special gift to me from my husband. A pox on the thieves! I am thinking seriously of getting security cameras and simply letting every crew know we have an elaborate system. My brother is a contractor and has them all over his worksites....See MoreHow do you work with a contractor who hates you?
Comments (30)Update: The carpenter came this morning and took down the cabinets. To his and my surprise, the glued ones came down very easily - no damage to the cabinets, and very little to the wall. (I almost didn't insist on replacing the cabinets because I was terrified the wall would collapse!) He and I had a cordial discussion about reordering the cabinets. He agreed to price them out and send me the quote so I could buy them where I wanted. He seemed grateful I wasn't going to insist he buy them someplace more expensive. (The result of that pricing exercise is now in another thread addressed to Kompy & LiveWireOak. :-)) Later the foreman came by, and I apologized to him for yelling at him last week. He was very gracious about it, and I think it helped clear the air a bit, at least in my head (and hopefully in his). I still have concerns about using the same carpenter to rehang the cabinets, but I don't have to deal with those *this* week. Also confirmed that the invoice was a computer mistake. Happens all the time. So far, so good - knock on wood!...See Morecpartist
