Did I paid too much at HD? (granite countertop)
Comments (2)You're always going to find someone who'll lowball the price you've been given just to get the work, espeiclaly in this economy. That said, I've got two contradictory things to say. First, as you've already found out, HD is hit or miss, and I've seen just as many nightmares as I have happy endings. Secondly, the price you've been given really isn't that bad, provided you get what you're paying for. One other thing-- You say you haven't gotten the faucets or sink yet-- you want to make sure that not only do you get those to them before they begin fabrication, but you also want to get a receipt from them that you've handed those pieces to them, so there's no question about it later. As for going directly to the fabricator, they may very well have a no- compete clause with Home Depot just for that reason....See MoreHow much for granite (installed) per square foot?
Comments (39)storklady, Good for you for keeping the budget in mind. I bet the Wilsonart looks really good, even if it's not your first choice. It's hard sometimes to look at what other people on this site have done and then settle for less. We replaced floors on the first floor (including kitchen) last spring/summer, and hope to deal with appliances and countertops this year. I'm beginning to think that we, too, will have to settle for laminate countertops, instead of solid surface that I really wanted. But so far we've paid cash (or used credit card and paid off before any interest charges) for the home improvements we've been doing. Yes, I'd like to do a complete reno with all my wish list materials, but I like being virtually debt-free better (in a little under 2 years we should have the mortgage paid off early and then we will be debt-free). So, while understand the angst of giving up on something you dreamed of, I applaud your decision. It sounds like it was the right one for you....See MoreHow Much For a Granite Fireplace Surround- Need Advice ASAP
Comments (8)I'm a little confused. Your drawing says tile but your post says slab. Did you change plans from tile to slab after the drawing? Also, your drawing shows a dimension of 5'2" across the bottom which equals 62", but that appears to cover columns plus surround width of 6" + 44" + 6" which equals 46". Granite fabrication pricing can vary a lot depending on where you are and also from fabricator to fabricator. Are there any edge details or such that cause extra fabrication time? Our fireplace surround is very similar in size. The material for the surround is left over from our kitchen remodel and we bought a small slab for our hearth. Our quote is just labor - $600 for fab and installation. It is very simple - no fancy edges. 8" wide, but that probably doesn't make much difference to the quote. Ours is also taller - 54" - and a bit wider - 52". Our surround is being fabbed as 3 rectangular pieces - a top and 2 sides because of the size of our remnants. A fabricator might charge more to fab and install a similar surround as one piece. There would be more chance of breakage I think and it might take an extra installer to handle the weight of the surround. I think that it would have cost more if we used the fabricator who did our kitchen....See Moreextra-thick granite or marble countertops?
Comments (16)Trinitybay, we were a national distribution center located in Southern California supplying select colors for the Home Depot Program. I am going back about a year but there were still fabricators buying 2cm to support the program and I know that fabricators were using our materials for their walk-in customers as well. Unfortunately, I donâÂÂt have the fabricator network list anymore. As for the 6âÂÂoverhang, itâÂÂs in the Marble Institute or AmericaâÂÂs countertop Module. I canâÂÂt remember the exact wording but the recommendations were suggestive of: 6â or greater or when less than 2/3 of the countertop is cantered, supports are needed. For 3cm the MIA recommends 10â or greater but in the North East itâÂÂs not uncommon to see 12âÂÂ. If you want to avoid corbels and brackets have the installer extend the plywood sub-tops a few more inches. Hope this helps....See Moredan1888
