Handle-less: Spring-load mechanism to push open pullout / drawers
Comments (6)Casey: "touch latch" is a good term. Also push latch. JLC: The Australian site posted by JLC has a good review of handle options, including mentioning recessed grooves to grip fingers into. -- The link above is for Besta, which I bought and tried. It doesn't work with Metabox slides that Ikea uses in kitchen drawers. ---- Explanation why touch latches do not work: Metabox has a Self-close "bump" that grabs the drawer when it is sliding closed. To open the drawer, this bump prevents it from opening unless 5lb. force is applied over a specific distance from about 0.75" to 1.5" away from the cabinet. We don't feel this force when we pull since we can use our whole body. The distance to travel is too great for a push latch, and the force required may also be too large. Secondly, a touch latch needs a 0.125" distance "at rest" to reset itself, but the Metabox self-close presses the drawer front against the cabinet too hard to give much room to play with. ajsmama: If I had started with Tandem, things might be different. I don't know about Tandem's self-close bump. - -------- I'll stick with Ikea's (or Blum's) Metabox since I got the cabinets and slides from Ikea already and am now comfortable with them. On the drawer front, I can remain handle-less by adding a horizontal strip (like a Schluter profile) to grip from above, making the drawer front a bit taller. It works for me since I'm customizing this part of my installation anyway....See MoreUtrusta (electric push latch) on non-Ikea cabs?
Comments (7)kksmama- that's EXACTLY what my cabinet looks like. That damn song is now burned into my head ... oh what an earworm!!!! What is it about Austrians and Germans that they come up with these little dittys (I have a trade show in Duseldorf every 4 years and they create a similar sounding ditty every time for it ... takes almost a year to get it out of my head!). This gives me enough confidence to try it ... my compactor (yes, we're actuallly keeping it!) is next to it and has a foot pedal, so this will give us truly hands-free trash access!...See MoreHELP! Looking to buy...discontinued Ikea, Akurum,Lidingo drawer fronts
Comments (10)It's only in store pickup. IKEA does not allow you to talk to the stores directly. Covina had some doors still. Some at full price, some on discount. All their Akurum stock was full price. They are still showing on inventory. Carson had some doors showing in inventory. The rest is in as is and put out each day. I bought the Ramsjo door and cover panel from inventory and the toe kick from as is. Last Friday Carson had all the Akurum in every size stacked to the ceiling in as is and in inventory at 70% off but they were all gone the next day. I came back because I bought the wrong size on 2 boxes. One man ripped a door from my hand in the as is section and dared me to do anything about it. Most of the as is stock at Carson gets bought by Mexican resellers so unless you're right there at the exact time, don't bother. I had to wrestle people just to get 4 shelves cause it was like locusts descending on a field of grain. All you saw was heaving bodies. Both Costa Mesa and Carson have women and children sitting there the entire day to grab stuff that comes out to the as is section. As of Sunday, Costa Mesa only had cabs and drawers in as is. They can't tell about the doors because all their inventory was taken off line and they pull down from the rack each day to refill their as is section. You can call IKEA and make them check stock for Covina. They don't like to do it but switch person or go up the chain til they do. Covina is probably your best bet as it is huge and at full price. San Diego and Burbank also has inventory at full price. Once a store shows the inventory you need, make IKEA call the store directly for a warehouse stock check to verify. These stores are all in So Cal....See MoreLooking for Reviews of Ikea Sektion Drawer-Within-a-Drawer
Comments (6)I have had the Sektion drawer in drawers since April. Overall, I really like them. I don't find them cumbersome to use. It is easier to keep the items you use most often in the bottom section so that you don't have to then pull out the top section to grab something. When you open the drawer, the main drawer (bottom) is exposed. To get at the interior drawer, you have to then pull that one open. I don't think you can "lock" the top drawer so that it's the first one you see when you open it, but you can kind of grab it as you're opening the main drawer so they both open at once. I do like that I can separate things so that I don't have one huge drawer with too much stuff in it. For example, I have my baking utensils in the top drawer, then my general utensils in the bottom. Every single top drawer you see in my kitchen has a drawer within a drawer. The lower drawers are just regular drawers. In the island, I have my pot lids in the top interior drawer and my pots below them in the main drawer. It works really well to keep things organized. One note, which IKEA may have addressed by now: The screws from the cabinet hardware stick out and bump up against the interior drawer, causing the paint to rub off. I bought some adhesive drawer bumpers to prevent this. I've attached a photo showing this. And I'll also attach some photos of the kitchen itself, which I am super happy with. Happy to answer any other questions!...See MoreHenry Fernandes
