The tiny white flies you see could be, and probably are, a common insect called, as you would imagine, a White Fly. In this country there are two species of white fly, the citrus white fly and the greenhouse white fly. Both feed by sucking the juices (sap) from the leaves, and leave their sticky honey due (excretions) on the plant surface. As you only see a few not much damage can result, but they can multiply VERY VERY RAPIDALY.

Thank you Silica! From what I read in you link, I suspect that is it. There are probably not many because I have been spraying. The problem is that I can't really drench the tree when in my son's bedroom. Will the neem and HO with soap do the trick? I think I can take the four trees in his room out on Wed and thoroughly coat them.

Laura, just Neem alone with a good emulsifier like a drop or two of soap or Pro-teck will do the trick.

Young nymphs overwinter on the leaves of host plants. In late spring adult females deposit 200-400 eggs in circular clusters on the undersides of upper leaves. The eggs hatch in 5-10 days and first instar nymphs, which resemble small mealybugs and are called crawlers, move a short distance from the egg before and they do secrete honey dew..

Sounds like you got them in time Laura! I am sure silica has it right but the only times I have ever seen the white fluff is when I have aphids... but that was on peppers not citrus. I'm sure your son is pleased with his new roommates lol?

I just came in from hosing them off. I took them out this afternoon along with all the ones in my kitchen that had the mites minus the massive guava. It's going to 56 tonight and up to the 60s tomorrow. I figured I'd let them get some rain since it's going to rain tonight and tomorrow....then spray them down. I want to make sure the mites are totally gone. I washed out the mix and sprayed the leaves hard with the hose. I was happy to see that the navel orange and rangpur lime are both blooming. I had not even noticed! I'll let them soak up the rain and tomorrow spray them down.
