ODD Front Loader problem.

last modified: 8 years ago

Helped out a friend today finally fix his 3 year old Front loader today. Not withstanding the fact he had 3 separate service calls for the same problem. The struts were changed previously, and both suspension springs. Yeeks!

The problem was a very pronounced clanking sound on initial spin and and when nearing a stop from a spin. There was no indication of bearing failure, no play in the drum. I briefly thought perhaps a crack in the spider, but nothing indicated that.

What caught my attention is the sound could be reproduced without the machine running, and simply manipulating the drum.

What I found where the spring connects directly to the drum housing, which is plastic or whatever, the mechanical movements of the metal spring against the plastic was enough to cause a resonating clanking sound. I removed both springs, a llittle WD40, a dot of silicon, and coated the hooks on the springs in bearing grease and reassembled.

Problem fixed! Obviously the previous service wasn't very through. IMHO a metal spring through a hole in a plastic drum case, with as much gyration as a FL produces will eventually wear away the plastic. Some sort of rubber grommet would be a good idea. And shame on the tech who installed springs and didn't have the common sense to maybe apply a coating of grease!

@dados I would welcome your comments on this.

You can visually see the wearing of the metal and no doubt the case.
