I'm not sure that all clematis grows true from seed, especially from cultivars. This is actually how new cultivars are often discovered. A seed-sowing tip for clematis: don't remove the tails when you plant the seeds. I'm not exactly sure why, but that's what my propagation book says. I do have some clematis tangutica seeds that I can mail you. They have little yellow bell flowers, and usually bloom the year they are planted, if planted early enough. Ken Druse's book on propagation says the following about clematis in general: "Seed-moist cold 2 to 5 months depending on species, sow indoors (70 to 75 degrees) (germination 30-365 days depending on the species). I can tell you that I have had pretty good results with other seeds that come up in unexpected places by sowing them into pots in the fall and leaving them outside to the rain and cold all winter. In the spring I begin watering and they will often come up, sometimes even before I begin watering. If you have an ongoing supply of seed, it's worth a try. Sorry I cannot be more specific.

Hey Deb I grew sweet autumn clematis from seeds and planted 3 or 4 plants next to the fence when we first moved here. I was so excited to have them finally since I'd always loved the look of the masses of frothy white flowers draping over a fence. Only it never did get the way I imagined. The flowers were few and far between and they were not really white. The foliage covered the fence and the trees and the cable guy's van parked on the other side. And then the foliage stuck to the white vinyl fence when winter came and you could see this huge tangle of bare vines with the dead, grey leaves plastered on the fence. Took a lot of work to get rid of it all. Then I read a warning that sweet autumn clematis is invasive but I can't remember what part of Florida that applies to. It might be OK up where you are. And it might perform better where you are. It would be nice to see you have success with this plant! Susie
