Why do greenhouse use diffused light?
Comments (9)tapla, well said. In Florida, almost no one uses glass due to the hurricane building codes. WHen we were considering attaching a greenhouse structure to our home that would have encompassed the swimming pool, we were of course concerned with the aesthetic appearance (ie we didn't want a utilitarian corrugated Lexan addition, LOL) so we explored with a few different contractors the possibility of using glass. For us in the Northern portion of the state, the hurricane danger used to be considered not as bad as that in the lower part of the state, but now the building codes have moved to become more standardized over the entire state and any new structure must have a wind resistance rating of at least 120 mph. Also, since it would have been attached to the home and used as a "habitation area" for people, specifications called for special tempered glass for safety codes. It would have been so expensive we just couldn't do it. I have single thickness corrugated Lexan on my greenhouse. When I built it, I was offered a choice of clear or opaque glazing, or a mixture of the two. It DOES come in OPAQUE. The opaque has the appearance of a frosted light bulb. It offers about a 60-65% light transmission. The company who built my greenhouse for me recommended the opaque to be used on my roof, because I have a 20 foot ceiling and it would be difficult for me to utilize shade cloth up there on a 1750 sq ft structure if I found that the clear offered too much light. They also recommended using the opaque on the Eastern exposure. They recommended it due to the intense sun and heat here in Florida in summer. I still have the sample of it, if you have never seen the opaque Lexan up there in MI I can snap a photo of it for you. Maybe its a Florida thing? But I didn't like the look of it so I chose the clear glazing for the entire greenhouse. I am glad I did because after 5 years I do have some hazing, and dirt buildup on the roof from leaf drop etc. I use a pressure cleaner to keep the walls clean (twice a year)...See MoreAnyone Have Experience with Cat Pheromone Diffusers?
Comments (5)Varies from critter to critter, so you just have to try. Random responded marvelously to them, as does Goku (to the dog version). I think I might still have a couple of spare diffuser units, which is the expensive part. Drop me an email if you'd like me to look and I'd be willing to pass one or two along depending on how many I have. Our dog Totally Freaks Out (lots of OCD-like behaviors and he completely forgets his housetraining, usually complete with vile diarrhea) when we move so with this last move we were begging, borrowing, and mooching the Comfort Zone units from everywhere and everyone we could so we could put one in every room since our new house has so little circulation between rooms. The refill bottles are cheap on eBay if you're willing to accept ones that are past date. I contacted Farnam to find out if the product would spoil or be less effective and they said no, they're fine for up to a year past date. (Sorry, since my kitty-girl crossed the Bridge over 2 years ago I don't have any cat refills on hand.)...See MoreBest home fragrance/diffuser?
Comments (34)Another vote for Lampe Berger!!! They are amazing at removing, not covering odors. My favorite fall scent is Amber Powder. Cant describe it, you just have to smell it. I also like Jouney to Bahia and Fig but there are lots of other scents, and a neutral without scent to cleanse the air. The oil can get costly if you're like me and have 3 lampes, but well worth it. 10 or 15 minutes and the house is fresh again. IMHO nothing works this well. When i cant get any oil to burn, i like Circle E candles in Ambrosia (very popular where i live) and Silver Bells for Christmas (cranberry-orange scent). You may want to look into either of those options online. ON A SIDE NOTE, the lampes come in such pretty designs that you can find something to match your decor and it isnt obvious what it is. Also, the knockoff oils are just okay, but are no comparison to the original....See MoreOil diffuser question
Comments (18)I started a conversation about this a few weeks ago. We haven't gotten one yet. We sleep with the window wide open as well as the rear door cracked open. There's a lot of fresh air, breeze in the bedroom. I'm sure this will negate the benefits and we wouldn't even smell the oils. I have thought of just buying a small bottle and putting some on a cotton ball and sticking it between our pillows to see if it helps us sleep better. Our friends told us about how much they love the lavender for sleeping, when we were with them over New Years. I'm very sensitive to scents and I don't want anything strong at all. Our neighbour burns incense all the time, and her home reeks, and the cats are exposed to it. I feel so sorry for them. I get a headache after being there for any short period of time, and it even gets absorbed in any yogurt containers, etc that she might give me for whatever reason....See Moresunfeather
