good fruit tree nurseries in south bay area
Comments (8)I just wanted to add that anytime I want something out of the ordinary I use mail order nurseries. Specialty nurseries are often excellent, since they sell to those in the know. Very few retail nurseries, even those of excellent quality such as Yamagani's, can have depth as well as breadth. They can't afford to, since their market is the general gardening public. Perhaps their typical customer is more discerning than that, since they are shopping at a real nursery instead of a box store, but still they cannot specialize too much. One thing about fruit trees is that you may want to concentrate on California-based mail order businesses, if you decide to go that way. A couple of out-of-state nurseries I called were not allowed to ship the fruit trees I wanted to California. I believe that some of the really big ones (Stark) have less problem with this. Apparently there are all sorts of expensive agricultural inspection hurdles to mount for a nursery in another state to ship fruit plants to California. This is California protecting its agricultural base. Kinda surprised me, thinking how fast we are paving over the best agricultural land for expensive housing, but so it is. Comments (31)Hello Stephanie, Stan and Kawagoe, Here is my first bloom of 2017! It seems I will have only three of my 20 plants blooming. This is a cutting I got from a front yard in LA in 2015. I drive down there quite often and that is from where most of my cuttings come.....relatives, friends and strangers who like to share. Of the seven plants I ordered from Maui Plumeria Gardens last October only three are still among the living. I planted and kept them indoors all winter. These are the first plumeria for which I paid. I will try to go back to Maui in September and purchase a replacement for the Scott Pratt (red) variety. All of my other plumeria remained outdoors under overhangs during the winter. I planted a large four foot cutting into the ground a couple of weeks ago in Prunedale. I live in Santa Clara during the week which is warmer so I will definitely have to cover my newest addition over the winter. I'll keep my fingers crossed. It was a freebie from a very fragrant yellow plumeria tree in LA that some ladies gave me from their front yard. I'm sure your are all also enjoying your blooms........ Take care, Aileen...See MoreGarden Inspiration Classes 2/11 at Alden Lane Nursery in Livermore, CA

Comments (7)Hi Cori - I planted Twilight Zone last spring and I'm seeing the first flush start for the first time. The blooms are lovely. But before you rush out and buy that standard, read on. I'm seeing that this rose doesn't have that many canes. The canes that are there have a lot of these star burst bud clusters. I'm not sure this type of growth habit makes the best tree standard. To have a nice shape, I think it's better to have lots of flowering branches, top to bottom rather than just a few canes with tons of flowers. Typically I think floribundas and shrubs are better for standards rather than hybrid teas and grandifloras like TZ. So don't be sad - I think you made the right decision!
