Nuccia's kitchen is DONE! See my pictures!!!
Comments (58)imrainey: The countertop on my baking center is actually at the regular 36" height, not lower. I get a backache when I work at lower counters. I'm 5'6". mustbnuts: I use my undercabinet LED lighting mainly for accent lighting because I have very good lighting otherwise. If you need strong task lighting, make sure you have enough light output. A lot of GWers have used Ledtronics (ledtronics.com); they have a good website. I actually wound up buying my lights from a vender I found on ebay, Acolyte Industries (http://acolyteled.com/ ). I called them to get some technical details, and wound up purchasing through them directly. In addition to the lights, you will need a transformer for each switched group of lights. I have all my glass display lights on one transformer and all my undercabinet lights on another. I had also thought of having the left and right sides of my kitchen switched separately, but decided against it. We placed the transformers in our basement, under the kitchen. Some people place the transformers in the back of an upper cabinet. Do your homework before you commit to them or make any purchases. Use the search function at the bottom of the page to look up led undercabinet lightingthere have been several threads in the past year that have been very helpful. Also, make sure you buy "soft white" leds. The regular white ones are way too harsh....See MoreLooking for slabs -- question on soapstone and quartzite options
Comments (12)We just had soapstone counters installed last week and love them! We were not comfortable with local stone yards lack of inventory and information on soapstone though - each had 1 slab that could be scratched with fingernails. We ordered a sample pack through M. Teixeira in NJ and were very impressed with the variety and durability of some options. We selected Stormy Black - it is hard with dramatic veining. Fortunately we are only 90 minutes away from their location. They did a phenomenal job fabricating too. Oiled they are a gorgeous charcoal color that plays well with the light grey shaker cabinets. It is a big decision! Good luck....See MoreQuartzite or Soapstone next to cooktop?
Comments (6)Hi, etab35 If you attach a picture of your kitchen it would give us an idea of how your kitchen looks, because many things affect the aesthetics. For example; natural light, floor finish, ceiling height, layout, and even the color of appliances (black, white our stainless steel) are some factors that influence when selecting materials. Also, it depends on the look you are seeking: traditional, modern, contemporary or rustic. We, as a design firm, often recommend quartzite counter tops because it is a hard and non-porous surface and the color range varies mostly between white to grey, (there are also different color veins). These tones work well with most colors, and as a result are very popular in kitchens. Because you have white BM white Dove cabinets you can pick a beautiful white with dark grey veins quartzite and a darker tile backsplash to contrast the backsplash. This combination can make the kitchen more dynamic. The cooktop would match the dark veins in the quartzite and the backsplash tones, as well as the other appliances making the entire space cohesive. With lighter color materials, the kitchen will look bigger and more illuminated; besides it is easier to pick furniture because the hard materials have neutral colors. Whatever material you decide to use, it would be nice to post a picture of the final look. * In the image below you can see the combination of quartzite counter top, white cabinets, and a backsplash with contrast, you can add a color paint to make the space more vibrant.
