Space between upper cabinets and counter
Comments (8)Most often inspectors will use the specs from the range/cooktop for the cabinets on each side of it. That is typically 18". Often specified as 54" above the floor. There are ways, depending on layout, to configure the rest lower. I use a minimum of 16 in those. My own is done that way to accomodate the short folks in the house. Cab on each side of srange at 18 rest at 16. Can be tricky to make work. Occasionally some are done higher-21 to a maximum 24. Usually in contemporary projects but not always. Doing one now that has a stretch with a bit set between two standard height....See More16" space between counter and upper cabs too short?
Comments (25)We had 15" in our old kitchen and I hated it, but it really depends on how you're using the space. In our kitchen, it was the primary work space so I was always hitting the cabinets, and the stand mixer kept gouging the underside of the cabinet when I'd forget to pull it out all the way before flipping it back. But if, in contrast, you're using the space to house a microwave or toaster oven or what-have-you--16" will be fine (and better to have the storage space there). Don't forget that you can put three shelves in a 34" cabinet, too, though. We have three in a 32" cabinet and love it--every shelf doesn't need to have a full 12" of clearance. I can reach all of our shelves (intentionally designed that way) and we keep cans/jars on the lowest shelf since they don't need height. How tall are your ceilings? If you post that with a floor plan, I'm sure you will get lots of feedback and ideas on how to plan the cabinetry! If you're doing custom cabinetry, I wouldn't feel hemmed in by standards sizes and distances--one of the benefits is that you can mix it up and do what works best for your space....See MoreGlass backsplash tile - no space between tile and granite counter
Comments (6)The wall is shared with the inside wall of the Garage. We did use the thinset recommended by the manufacturer (nice to know I did ONE thing right). I used 1/16" joints because we are also using strips of mosaic tile and I wanted all the joints to match. The manufacturer also recommended sanded grout, but now with my joints so small would it do any good to switch to unsanded? It is 5am and I am actually considering ripping all the tile off. Would that work? Would I be able to reuse the tile? Ugh, what a mess....See MoreHow many inches is best between counter and window in kitchen?
Comments (1)You don't need to have any if you don't want a separate sill, and if you want a sill that rests on the counter, probably 1.5" would be good. If you want trim under the window sill to match the wood trim, I would leave enough for the trim to fit underneath without squeezing it in + the sill. No trim underneath, and I would leave enough for a full tile if its subway or at least 3/4 a tile if its larger than 4x4 + the sill. You don't want slivers of backsplash tile or trim. If the window has a crank, leave enough room to for you to crank the window comfortably. If it is push-out, that doesn't apply....See MoreILoveRed
