Counter advice - Cold Spring or Black Pearl Leathered
Comments (14)Thanks for the advice but thanks even more to all the people that take time to share their experiences. I have never used a forum before and I actually think you've saved my sanity. I had never heard of OTK before but once I read about it I realized that I was having trouble picking granite because yes, it was beautiful, but it wasn't what I had ever envisioned as MY kitchen. So I went out and found a beautiful slab of Calacatta marble for my island. I LOVE it. To me, it looks like a watercolor painting. I couldn't be more pleased and excited. So now I have a island counter top. Looking for ideas for perimeter counters to coordinate with the Calacatta. This picture was very difficult to take as I was wedged between the blocks of marble so colour is off. Really not that blue. Just beautiful white, grey and taupe veining. Thinking Cambrian Black leathered. Any other suggestions? Also, need to pick hardwood floors. Pre-finished or site finished? Thinking medium toned oak. Is it worth the agg (sanding, fumes, out of house for a few days) for the non beveled result. Prefer no bevels but DH wants prefinished although only $900 difference in price between the two. Comments (7)Thanks! Virginia mist is almost double the price per square foot so it is a pretty big difference. However I am trying not to have a granite "look" and more of a soapstone or quartz look without the price. I like the horizontal movement of the Virginia Mist but can't seem to find another granite like that that is less in price....See MoreWater/soap marks on leathered silver pearl (aka steel grey) granite
Comments (8)Thanks Beth. The problem with the pics is that the marking doesn't show up (not that the pics don't load). Unless you see a large amount of it from standing back you wouldn't notice it. We got a lot of variable advice on sealing when we were considering this leathered finish on this particular granite. The general consensus was that it's one of the most non-porous varieties, and that sealing it would head us back towards a shiny finish, which is not what we wanted. At the start we pooled water on it for over 30mins with no apparent absorption, and in general it wipes up really well. It may be that this marking is down to soap rather than water, but it's hard to tell. If there's such a product that seals without changing the appearance I think we'd go with it. Do you have any specific recommendations?...See MoreDoes this black granite sink look ok?
Comments (9)The black color of that granite composite sink (it is not “granite”) will look great. What won’t look good is the dated 50-50 sink in a D-shape. Try to find a rectangular sink instead. Also try to think about a single-bowl sink if possible. If you insist on a double-bowl sink, look at 70-30 or 60-40 bowls. The 50-50 double-bowl sink has been out of date for more than a decade. That’s because a 50-50 sink means that neither side is big enough to set anything down, and you bang into the divider constantly. People who had those from 15 or 20 years ago never wanted them again, and either went for a single-bowl sink or a 70-30 or 60-40....See MoreT Smith
