please help with window treatment suggestions
Hi everyone, I recently got a new rug in my living room and just finished retiling our fireplace. My current curtains (4 panels) don't feel like they are working with the new rug. Our window is a bank of 5 windows, and is 12 feet wide.
Can you recommend some colors/direction to go? I want the room to feel casual, fresh and light.

here is a pic of our new rug in the room. it is a deep burgundy red. our furniture has to stay how it is more or less. I do plan to clean up the bookcases eventually, maybe put nice shelf paper on the back. please ignore the terrible mess (courtesy of my twin terrors). our window bank is all along the sofa side (will post a pic when it is daylight).
Any advice on how to lighten up the room?
Do you think roman shades or drapes would work better?

I should also mention that our windows face the street, so we would use them every night for privacy (and movie watching). Right outside the windows is a giant pine tree which makes this room fairly shady by afternoon/evening.

They send you all the samples you could ever want and the quality has seemed to match the big names window treatments that my mom has in her house. Great customer service too. I contacted them many times about measurements and questions about the product itself. I had one wood valance get slightly damaged in shipping. They sent a replacement - no questions asked. I had the double cell blinds, double cell room darkening, wood blinds and one other room darkening (not a double cell). I wouldn't get the non-double cell again, but only bought them because they were on sale. I would buy all the others again in a heartbeat. Comments (8)Very pretty room so far. I recognize the bedding from PBteen. Have you checked their website for inspiration? I think either choice is fine, though with any panels, it looks like you would need to move the dresser you've placed between the two windows. One advantage of the chocolate drapes is that they would be more room darkening. Another option would be to go with the dotted sheers to echo the bedding. I checked the website and they have white with chocolate dots (even on sale!) which you could layer with a chocolate roller shade. I wonder if you could paint the shades you have now with fabric paint. You can echo the same WTs' over the closet area as well. I know you didn't ask about room layout, but if you do opt for panels, I'd suggest placing her bed between the two windows with the nightstand off to the side. As it looks like the desk and bookcases are part of a unit, I was wondering why you split them up? It would seem more functional to group them together on the long wall where the bed is now, though perhaps there is not enough clearance. I have 3 kids, two high school age and I find it very practical to have a nice study area with plenty of desk space and shelving nearby. Pretty room and I must say I am partial to the colors having only recently done both of my two DD's room in varying shades of aqua (one like you did it, the older one more of a turquoise). Comments (3)Break this down into two steps to make it easier. Tackle function first. Don't worry about a valance until after you live with the shade for a while. Get dressed and go to the stores and play with their displays. Find one that give you privacy, but also works with your fan. The valance is just fluff and you might decide that with your clean lines that you don't want one. The pleated shades that Daisy mentioned sounds just like what you need.
