Comments (39)Morning, Woebegonia..The soil has to be sold in my area...Last spring, while repotting, I went to several stores looking for certain mediums.. A couple weeks ago, maybe longer, I phoned several of these stores asking if they had EarthGro, but they all said, they never heard let alone sold this soil. Feel like I'm in a Twilight Zone episode..lol. BTW, I reread your post..you said, I said I knew of 4 mediums w/actual soil. Maybe I said I pot using black soil, sand, Perlite and bark? The last three are soil=less..I can't recall the thread you mentioned..hmm??? Charlie..I'm so sorry about your health..You'll be in my prayers... Gotta give your son credit..he wasn't about to give up, even if it meant breaking a couple ribs. Hopefully, the docs will find the correct meds and whichever treatment works best for you. Gone 7 minutes! God in heaven. Personal question if you don't mind...did you see any lights, tunnels? You don't have to answer if uncomfortable. Yep, certain TC are very expensive..the sellers realize this and take advantage. I'm sure several people bought 'Aspen' segments so they too would be able to sell cuttings once their plant is large enough. Yes, time for reading and working w/plants..but don't overdo it..follow your docs instructions. Please, Charlie. Hirt's sells numerous in and outdoorplants..Insects, supplies, seeds. If you go back to their site, check the left side of screen, click on plants, then scrool down to House Plants and/or Succulents. Other plants they sell are annuals and perennials..garden plants. Thank you..Seek help, lol. Charlie, I normally buy small plants, too, but the 6" Sansevieria was the only size available. I first saw this Sans on Sans forum, liked then ordered..lol. If I hadn't seen one on GW, I'd never have went to Hirt's, and sought out the SAns..lol. Don't blame you..I don't fiddle with rooting leaves/stems. As long as the leaf/cutting looks healthy, it's alive. Tampering w/roots isn't advisable. When your Jade grows new leaves, and your really curious, only then should you peek at roots. I knew a girl who killed more cuttings by disturbing roots. Then she'd ask me for more cuttings..That got stale after a year or two..She and I no longer talk..lol. LOL, I'll have to checkout Liza's house...lol.. First have to figure what's wrong w/my email, then get ready soom..have a doc appt today.. Take care, Charlie..hugs, Toni...See More2 New Additions from my local nursery
Comments (7)Yes, mesembs, I have no idea what "Created in Japan" was referring to. Species originated in Japan? Hybrid developed in Japan? Maybe just some marketing gimmick to make people think they were in the presence of something rare and exotic from a far away place. I'm going to see if the grower R Z Nursery has a website. Maybe that will offer up some clues. These 2 came from Mission Hills Nursery so they are just the middle man. For the most part Mission Hills takes really good care of their plants. They now have put up some cloth over the succulents so they aren't getting beaten up by harsh direct sunshine on our non-overcast days. I was hoping to find one of those H. truncatas but they didn't have any. Maybe next Spring. I've liked the looks of the Astrophytum for awhile so since these were only $7, I like supporting our local small independent nurseries AND I couldn't just leave there spending $2 (right?), I decided to get the 2nd plant as well. All of them whether 3, 4, or 5 lobes had the identical tags saying Astrophytum myr. 'Onzuka'. Can anyone tell me, please, what "myr." refers to? Some botanical terminology, I'm guessing. Thanks, Tyler...See MoreHildewinteria colademoni, Cleistocactus colademononis, Monkey Tail
Comments (54)Also late to the convo., but you can get a good deal on monkey tails from Chitrasorchidcactus on eBay right now. They are 10” for $10, and she generally sends extras for additional postage. Aporophyllum, disocactus, true monkey tails and Epis all for sale by her. The confusion on names etc., is partly because there are so many hybrids now. Mattslandscape carries some gorgeous hybrids on eBay, but they are ridiculously priced, however, good for referencing what’s out there....See MoreNew Monkey tail :D (Hildewintera colademononis)
Comments (74)Without a shadow of a doubt you have a Monkey Tail/Cleistocactus winteri subs. colademononis🙂. Surprisingly I have found that this cactus can be a little sensitive to too much sun. A quote from Llifle: ”Sun Exposure: Require filtered bright light, partial sun or light shade, but not in full sun that will sunscald it. ” Last spring/summer I kept my Monkey Tail cactus outside in all day sun in a south facing yard, and some areas did get sun scald. Half day sun would work. I do think some Monkey Tail cactus are furrier than others, but imo age and stress plays a part in how furry they will get. From the looks I’d say it’s time to repot your pot full of Monkey Tails😁. Be sure to use a fast draining mix because these guys are pretty thirsty during the growing season, but just because they’re thirsty during the growing season ( Spring/Summer) doesn’t mean they want their feet constantly wet and soggy. Water when the mix becomes dry. A mix of 60% perlite and or pumice with 40% cactus mix will do just fine. Since you live in the Bay Area you should be able to find pumice. Pumice is superior, but perlite works. My hardiness zone is 9b so it gets a little too cold in the months of Dec-Feb. As you know our rainy season is in the winter. So I bring my Monkey Tail into the garage during those months. Cold and wet is not good for this cactus and most other cactus. The coolest my garage gets is somewhere near the low 40’s. I also keep my Monkey Tail cactus dry from the end of Oct thru early March. During the growing season I water mine once or twice a week. Sometimes more if it’s really hot and the mix is drying out quickly. What is your hardiness zone? You may be able to keep yours outside during the winter, but it will need to be protected from winter rains. Anymore questions feel free to ask🌵....See MoreRelated Professionals
