You need an architect. Preferably one local to your build. You've succumbed to the usual amateur mistake of designing a floorplan, not a house.

How high the basement ceiling? The shallow duct may work, but it would have to be wider to conpendate for the reduced cross sectional area. I assume the duct work is running perpendicular to the ceiling joists. If the duct is running parallel then you may be able to run the duct between two joists. If you can't move the duct then perhaps you can move the shower. It is more money but in the end you will have a shower you can use.

I just did most of my house in Dunn Edwards Swiss Coffee. I think that's the brand studio McGee used in her photo above? It's so popular at Dunn Edwards that they have cans on the shelf that are pre-mixed and ready to go. Anyhow. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Swiss Coffee. I seriously sampled 10 whites on posterboard and ordered a around 15 of the most popular warm whites on those pre-painted Samplize swatches that have sticky on the back. That service is awesome. Swiss Coffee is a perfect warm white that isn't too yellow or pink or green in low light. We did ceilings and walls all the same color to speed up the process (NO EDGEWORK at the ceiling!!) and it looks great! Once we get baseboards in I think I'll just do a semigloss in the same color.
