Miele 36" Rangetop with Grill Info

Hi - I'm trying to post about the appliances I have recently installed as there is not that much info on them out there. I got the 36" rangetop with the grill installed about a month ago. We've used it maybe 6 times since then.

- Burners are nice and hot, easy to adjust, pasta water boils faster than on my old lower BTU cooktop and my bok choy stir fry did not get soggy LOL

- Grill runs very hot. The first few times, I would put it on high to heat it up and then turn it down to cook. The grill marks on the food all tasted burnt. Now I heat up on a lower setting and that is better. I have no idea what you could even cook on high, it is that hot. I would like it to go a bit lower than it does for things I would like to cook through. I am not sure how it will work for veggies for example - it just might be too hot.

- You need a good vent hood with this appliance. Then the smells are pretty well contained. (I got a 42" Zephyr Siena Pro, 1200 cfm. Excellent value and a good place to save a little money IMO.)

- The cast iron parts all go in the dishwasher. However they are big and you can only fit one piece in at a time, and you don't want to put anything else in since the "grates and grills" setting is hot. I put the grill through once and it went well, but I should have scraped off more of the stuck on food bits. They did not come off in the DW (Miele Lumen).

- The cast iron grill literally cracked through during the preheat, along the front edge. I heard a weird noise and didn't know where it came from, and noticed it as I was putting the meat on. Miele is sending out a new one, and I hope this was just a fluke.

- If you get one of these, get the serial number off the back before you install it!

- I noticed on the thread about the Miele ranges that there is a lot of clicking to ignite the burners. I am getting about 6 clicks on the first lighting of a burner. If I shut it off and turn it back on relatively soon, it is maybe 2-3 clicks. One of the burners tends to take longer to ignite, and I've had a big puff of flame a couple of times when it finally catches. I have requested a service call on this and it's in process.

I'll try to update after service call and more use.

Thanks for the feedback! There is very little information on the Miele range tops/ranges, especially the grill. My 48" range with grill will be installed on the 14th and I am so nervous/excited about how it will perform. It's good to know that the high setting on the grill is too hot, I will try it on the low setting and see how that works. Please keep us updated!

Melis918, I hope you like the range. I seriously considered one but decided I really preferred wall ovens functionally. But honestly the range would have worked better in my kitchen layout. The ranges are beautiful - the best looking on the market right now IMO.

One other thing I really like is that the black enameled top is really easy to clean. It shows dust and crumbs more than stainless, but you don't have to worry about wiping it with the grain of the metal or scratching it. I had a Wolf cooktop at my old house that was stainless on top, and it was harder to clean. You had to be very intentional about how you did it, where with the Miele I can just lift the grates and give it a quick wipe.

You'll have to post about the range! Very exciting!

if I compare a 36in 600 CFM hood and an identical 42in 600cfm hood, even though the CFM is the same, the larger one may be closer to a 36in 900 CFM? Intuitively, I'd lean towards the larger capture area as being more effective, although I can't say how much more effective. If you watch steam and smoke rise from rangetop to the hood perimeter, it's clear that the column rises as sort of an expanding funnel and the hood has a relatively small draw area at the front and front sides. But once the "effluent" is more than an inch or so away from the sides, the hood draw is much weaker and it rises above the hood--about 1.5" seems to be a max. On mine the draw around the front lip literally rolls and then is drawn into the hood space. From what I've seen, the extra 3" of hood with a 27" deep would give somewhat of an advantage. Also, I used to work in restaurants and if you look how line hoods are designed, capture area is maximized to cover all cooking surfaces and often extending a few feet beyond (some even have air flow devices to handle makeup air and maximize the upward flow to the hood). Perhaps someone who paid more attention in physics and fluid dymanics classes could weigh in . . .

I just posted in another thread about wall ovens/rangetops versus ranges. I don't have any information on Thermador other than to say I have had two Thermador cooktops with the simmer burners. They are a bit irritating, but they do work. Still, I plan to replace mine with a Bluestar 36" Platinum in two weeks. Woohoo! I suspect the Thermador will be very expensive. Here is what I just posted in another thread: I have only had rangetops and double oven combos. The advantage to this combination is you are not married to either appliance. If something goes wrong, it's easier to replace. The downside is extra cost of cabinetry. This combination is also easier on your back. The large range combinations look beautiful and many people love them. They are space savers. But, I have seen posters on this forum complaining about a problem with the oven that can't be fixed or a problem with the cooktop. Then, they discover that it's cost prohibitive to replace the whole unit.

I'm on the side of open burner gas. I think the optimal arrangement is a range top and separate wall ovens. If you have to have a range, I suggest the BlueStar due to the burners. You use those more than anything else on a regular basis. To answer your question about open versus closed burner, open wins hands down every time. It's not difficult to clean. In my past, I've had open burner Wolf, Viking and BlueStar in a residential setting. My closed burner experience was with Thermador. It's been quite the adjustment moving from a BlueStar range top with open, star-shaped burners to much lower power Viking round open burners. I miss the BlueStar. I will also opine that while power is important, the shape of the burner is the most important feature. I don't like using the griddle in a residential setting. I find myself pulling out my old griddle pan. I go out side to the grill. Both features make a big mess inside and I don't like having to clean them up. Grease gets everywhere. That's my personal preference. You have to make that decision for yourself. Most people only see one of these in the showroom when it's shiny and new. Use it for a few years and see how they hold up. I do use the griddle burner for a warming tray. So, it does have a use. I don't think you need to dedicate a burner side for a grill or griddle. But, that is just me. I loved my BlueStar and I miss it.

I have a 48” BS. Excellent size for a home if you have the room. Two people can cook at the same time on it without banging elbows. Perfect for a family with more than one person who likes to make themselves a little meal. I use to work as a line cook part time in college for many years, large ranges are quite common. The places I worked that used tiny 6 burner setups also had other equipment like dedicated stand alone burners for 4 foot pots, dedicated wok elements, etc etc. Regarding grill...with a 48” you can skip it. Use the broiler element in the main oven, they are typically larger on 48” units. Save the rest of your space for burners or a griddle if you have use for that. At least that’s how my BS is. I use my broiler every week for steaks, kabobs, corn, etc. Nothing beats the flavor of a charcoal or hickory wood grill, but a gas grill is the same as a broiler minus the mess. *edit* sorry just saw you are using seperate ovens. No idea if stand alone ovens have broilers or how good they are.

Service call was a few days ago. I was not home but DH was. They apparently adjusted the igniters so they were aligned better. I'm seeing a slight improvement on the number of clicks to light, but nothing drastic. And we've gotten so used to lighting on a lower setting that I haven't checked to see if there is still the big puff of flame. I imagine if there are fewer clicks, less gas is coming out in total so it should light without the puff. If I remember to check, I'll comment on it.

Miele also mailed me a new grill. I sent in pics of the crack. Apparently no one's seen this happen before. (Who knows. I sometimes think that is a CYA comment.)
