Oh no! My dendrobium keikis!

Hey there! Hope all is well with everyone! Remember about a week ago I posted about my dendrobium keikis? Someone mentioned it was time to separate some of them from the mother plant because they were no longer reliant upon momma orchid. I haven't had the time to do so until tonight. So, as I was getting ready to do so I noticed the top of the growing spike has turned a blackish hue. It doesn't look good. I haven't changed anything as far as lighting, or watering. No drastic changes in temperature...it's gotten a bit warmer, and no longer dropping to the 50-60s in the evening. But that was just a cold front we had for about a week. What should I do? Also, should I cut the mother spike to get the keikis separated to plant them? I've never had keikis so I'm not sure where to cut to separate. Thanks guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️
