If not, making a knife will add a month of lead time and significant cost which we are hoping to avoid. Actually the original part of the house is 1773 but we have found evidence of at least 6 additions and much of the original house was updated with Greek Revival style fittings at some point. You could try Room & Board, but prices can get up there (although if you live where they have a warehouse/outlet--Minneapolis, I've heard the sales there are fantastic). You might find it more cost-efficient, tho, to look at similar tables as a whole-- base and top-- at sources like CB2 and West Elm. My experience has been that the tops screw on, so whatever top you're planning, you'd probably be able to conceal any unnecessary hardware. You've been scoping out your local craigslist, right? Even a really bad-finish piece could be worked on by you or a place that does powdercoating (I took my black steel Crate & Barrel TV/media stand to a place that normally does stuff like custom motorcycle painting, and for $100 it gave it an aluminum finish--better for my decor for less money than it'd cost to buy something else.

Thanks Megs. I've been wondering whether a drop leaf would work. That PB is too large but good food for thought. I like some of those ones on Wayfair. It would be helpful to see things in person or else have a way to return that doesn't incur a fee. (i.e. return to a local store, if needed). Yeah, I'm finding 24x36 is hard to find. I've been checking craigslist for a temporary table. There had been one that was 30" square. I felt kind of meh on it so by the time I responded, someone was lined up to pick it up.
