What color sofa/chairs/rug?

Boy do I need some help! We are nearing (hopefully) the final weeks of a kitchen remodel that includes painting most of the interior, new interior/exterior doors and hardware, and floor refinishing. I need/want to change my living room sofa, chairs and rug, as the colors clash horribly with the walls and the walls pick up the sofa color. I was thinking of either navy blue (?) or off white for the sofa. The red chairs were bought at Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and are good quality and could be reapholstered, but I'm fine with replacing. The walls in LR are BM revere pewter, all the trim is BM simply white and the stair rail will be black. The end tables will stay, as will the Kate Spade lamps that I love. Dining room will remain teal. Honestly, I'm not really sure what to do, so all advice will be welcome. Forgive the mess since we are in the middle of everything.

I don't want to use too much gray/teal, yet somehow I need to tie this all together. Any ideas?

I was thinking solid for the sofa- off-white, gray, navy? I could recover the chairs in a print and somehow tie it all together with the rug. DH thinks I should start with the rug and that will determine everything else.

Farrow & Ball has some gorgeous shades in their line. But in order to answer your question, there are several other important factors to consider: What color are sofas, chairs, rugs, drapes, etc.? What about your artwork? - While I don't think art should match the walls, do you have strong colors in paintings or prints that might look strange against a very soft background? What colors appeal to you, and what is the overall feel you desire in the room? Is the room open to other areas and if so, what colors have you used in the other areas?

Very nice indeed! & if you plan on spending much time in the chair, I would position it to enjoy the nice view, just like the sofa. It is so neutral, I think just about anything will coordinate w/ it. Just sayin'...

Looks like a beautiful, well-built home with nice trim. I'm going to disagree that you need to paint it. I think that since foyers and hallways are usually spare and devoid of much furniture that they benefit from having wallpaper. If you don't want a pattern, then what about a grasscloth? It comes in all colors and some even have muted patterns on them. You might also consider installing a wainscot or other wood trim to add interest. However, before you select anything, you need to consider the adjacent rooms and have a basic color palette and style selected to make sure that the foyer works with the rooms that open into it, probably by large cased openings. If you posted a picture of a rug, I can’t see it. If you’re asking if the one I suggested would work, I think It will. It’ll add a pop of color in your room and all of your current accent pieces would work with the colors in the rug. I’m currently considering purchasing this rug for my dining room. I love it! It’s on many different sites, so look around and get the best deal! They sell this everywhere from Bloomingdales to Home Depot! I was thinking of going with Home Depot, so I can return it to my local store if it doesn’t work. Good luck!

I think you should either find a rug you love and the coordinate with
that, or a print fabric you love for the sofa or chairs and start
there. If you start with upholstery fabric in a print, it may take the
direction of the rug more to a neutral. If you find a rug you love, it
may be easier to find fabric to coordinate, as there are infinitely more
choices. If you like the red chairs and they could work as is, I think
red looks stunning with the dining room color and could easily be
incorporated in a coordinating area rug.

Olychick: Thanks for the inspiration pics! Are you in Olympia? My son and his wife went to Evergreen and lived there a few years after graduation, so I have spent a great deal of time in OLY and love it. They are in Seattle now so I don't get to OLY as much. For my LR I think I am going to start with a rug, then figure everything else out. Today I've got painters, cabinet guys and GC crew here and I really want my house back!

Yes, I'm in Oly. Love it and Seattle, too (I grew up there). I'm in the TESC area :-) Good luck on your rug search. There are some great searchers here, so if you post some parameters, you can probably get help finding one.
