Splitting for fire wood

I do it every year about this time of year. Don't really have to, but its good exercise and plus this year we have a lot a mature hardwoods that just fell over during a freak storm.

Besides petrified wood, what are you guys and gals opinions in the toughest wood to split. Either green or brown. Doesn't matter. I'm talking about using an maul, ax and a wedge.

Here a list of the mature hardwoods we have at our farm.

hickory

red oak.

gum

elm

ash

Im not going to go into the species of what oak is oak. Just white oak or red oak.

My opinion would be elm. If I have some in the log pile, it goes straight into the fire.
