I like the second vanity, and I agree that the floor and window clash, or "Fight for attention."

I'd go for the window over the floor and choose a simpler floor.

I love the direction you are going. Love Allison's second picture although I'd probably go a tad less rustic with the vanity. Also agree that the floor should be less busy.

Just another suggestion: I stayed at a resort not too long ago and loved their bathroom: Solid surface for shower walls and floor with trough (?) drain at end (hard to see). Rain shower, handheld shower (I thought there was also a regular wall shower head). Totally loved it.

The first vanity - if you like the inset top - is horridly impractical. One spill or broken bottle and you will be using cotton swabs to get it out between wood and stone.

The second looks like lightly "cerused" walnut or dark stained something.

Love the shower door if paired with the black and white tiles.

I prefer the first vanity, except for the recessed counter, which as Lazy_gardens points out seems like a recipe for disaster. Given your other elements, though, I'd look for a darker finish.

My dislike of the second vanity stems mostly from the finish, which goes beyond merely rustic into "it looks mildewed" territory. It would probably look fine with a different finish, but I'm having trouble visualizing beyond the mildew.

While I like the floor on its own. Allison's mockup is a pretty convincing argument for simplifying the pattern.

Thanks! Agree about the floor and windows being too much. Consensus seems to be do the windows and not the floor. Budget and practicality may make me choose one over the other (ie I must change the floor but need not change the window).

Everyone seems to prefer the look of the second vanity, so I will focus on doing something similar. My head was turned by the beauty of the first, but I will let it go and move on now.

nosoccermom, I will have the trough, rain shower overhead and separate handheld. Haven't turned my mind to tile or solid surface in the shower, I'd love solid surface but I'm thinking I should do tile?

I love the vanity you posted, it would be great in my current house but for this place it is too sleek. I still want modern, but with more texture/age I guess. I have to mix the feel of the new-Georguan house with my minimalist/modern aesthetic.

Black or bronzed fixtures? Any pros and cons? I think brass and gold would be too shiny, but I've seen some nice weathered brass.

The second photo is just inspirational, I'll avoid the mildew look! ;) Looking for other vanities that offer the same feel: weathered/textured walnut, earthly dark vessel sink, black lighting, casual placement of the mirror ... trying to pull apart the elements of the picture that most appeal to me.

Something like this for texture and weathering? Vaguely brutalist, which could work I think.

I like the kitchen cabinets. The woven samples are gorgeous but a nightmare to clean/keep clean? I'm leaning towards a solid surface in the shower if we build again or remodel the next house. Tired of tile and grout lines - the look and the upkeep. I used cultured marble (only lightly swirled/monochromatic) in a second master shower/last house. So easy to clean and looks great, imo.

We have almost black in our MB w/no issues. Also in the powder room. I like the vessel shown on the rustic vanity, paired with a bronze faucet.

These photos are really making me rethink my boring standard walnut vanity, white ceasarstone counter in my new master. That top pic is gorgeous. What kind of marble is that? It's so dramatic. I like the bottom one also, but wow that marble and wood in the top is beautiful. Can you do a variation of it to prevent damage to the wood? I love the black white tile idea. Also, if you do bronze or black faucets (which I love) would you have to do all fixtures in the same finish? Would it get old?

I would certainly do all the master bath black or bronze. I don't think I would tire of it, no more than anything else. Black is pretty neutral. I think there is more risk of the gold fixtures feeling old.
