Arborvitae emerald green

I planted some almost a year ago. There are some tan/light brown branches that at the time I was told were from handling.

My question is can I cut them or should I just leave them alone?

interior browning is normal ...

they all appear to have grown.. extended this year ... so they are alive ...

what i cant tell.. if that one angled down is cracked or broken ... kinda center bottom ....

i would leave the center one alone. ...

i cant tell from the pic.. what the deal is with the left lower one ... if its grey to the tip ... then it is dead.. and should be cut back to a live part.. not necessarily all the way back ...

The one in the center is going to be abnormally gaunt when the dead foliage drops or is shaken out. Usually this cultivar presents a solid outer surface which obscures or more or less completely hides the dead inner foliage. Which means there is an issue, probably insufficient soil moisture. Otherwise 'Smaragd' is more susceptible to root rot than usual for Thuja occidentalis, cannot therefore be planted where water puddles or there is another soil wetness condition.

The dead branch on the other is probably some kind of blight, unless the branch was broken. If you are in the US and available when they are open your best bet for possible plant disease issue identification may be your local USDA Cooperative Extension office. They will need to see samples of affected parts.

I've decided to not plant Norway Spruce since it will get too large. Ken, I have 15'-30' from my patio to the fence. I do not want my mixed border (conifers + shrubs + perennials) to exceed 10'. So my question now: how close to Thuja I can plant other shrubs? I am reading an excellent book 'Gardening with conifers' by Adrian Bloom now. On many pictures shrubs seem to be planted very close to conifers. Please help!

You will probably not prevent bagworms, but you can control them. Bagworms are the larva of a moth that lays the eggs that then hatch to make those distinctive bags. Control is by physically removing the bag early on, spraying with "Bacillus thuringiensis - Kurstaki" early on or later with a Neem Oil product, maybe Spinosad, or maybe a pyrethrin based product. What might be causing the other problems would be at best a wild guess since numerous things could be the cause, ranging from physical injury to some other insect pest to a plant disease. The Bayer product is an extremely toxic poison that needs to be handled with great care and should only be used as an absolute last resort.

"Dig down 4-6 inches right at the trunks of a few to check for dampness. Tell us what you find as that is the key to everything. I suspect the rootballs have not had a chance to absorb the water no matter how much it pooled and the water was wicked away by the surrounding sand. If that is the case, only a slow trickle right at the trunk will save your trees." I dug and the rootballs are moist. At least the ground (err... sand) around the tree is moist 6 inches below ground level. So I'm guessing I should continue doing what I'm doing and hope they bounce back? It's only been a week since I started watering every day.

Hi Cat... did you ever come up with a solution? We've been trying to come up with a couple of attractive evergreens that are slender - no wider than 4 ft. at maturity. Live close to you, a hop and skip : ) We put in baby Oakleaf Hollies, which will have a mature width of 10-15 ft so that's not your answer, but are putting a privacy fence in behind them now (our first privacy fence). But we do need narrow evergreens in another area. We've planted a slender Hinoki Cypress this past spring, lovely tree, healthy, but I'm reading several contradictory maturity widths and they won't tolerate pruning so that's out. We'd thought of skyrocket junipers, but they seem to have issues here. Trying to talk DH into the Emerald Green Arborvitae, but he's reluctant thus far.

I will often shake some of my conifers such as emerald green arbs, conifers on standards, topiaries, and others that are shakable this time of year then remove the stuff that gets trapped inside on the bottom with my hands. Cleans em out so more light gets in and helps a tad as mulch/future nutrients. Whether or not this is good I have no idea, but I do it. I cant see any drawbacks.

Removal of interior dead foliage won't result in new growth unless outside shell of existing live foliage is reduced.
