Good time to plant manzanita?

Hi everyone, I'm new to planting native plants, so really thank you all in advance for all the help/tips for this newb....I think Im in zone 9b with sandy soil. I'd bought 2x Howard McMinn last summer and was told to put them in the ground and water sparingly, needless to say the heat and the dry soil cooked them alive and they didn't make it. Last week I bought a small 1 gallon Lester Roundhouse, is it the right time to put it in the ground now, or should I wait for it to get a little bigger? Thank you all.

I think you mean Rowntree rather than Roundhouse. I would think now through January would be the ideal time to plant (assuming you're in coastal/southern Cal), giving them a really good soaking when they go in the ground. Then watch and perhaps give them some additional water if the winter is abnormally dry. Some good tips here for California natives:

I agree with the above - now is a great time to plant. I think you got some bad advice previously - even drought tolerant native plants will need routine watering until they become established. And with shrubs, that takes at least two seasons, often longer if a more mature plant. Nothing is immediately drought tolerant after planting, regardless of species and/or location!! Also, sandy soils will need more frequent attention with regards to watering as well. FWIW, very few plants will do as well with NO watering as they would with a few deep soakings during very dry periods, even the most drought tolerant species.

Planting seeds from a dwarf cultivar may not (is unlikely to) produce offspring of similar size or even color. Your seed grown plants are likely to attain a variety of sizes and bloom various colors. In other words, you won't get consistent or dependable traits. If you really want to grow them from seeds, that's cool. I just want to make sure you know what to expect. If you are wanting plants similar to your original plant, you should definitely consider growing new plants from cuttings.

I would hold off on the banana.....tender perennial there. I just planted a Desert Willow and it was an iffy decision. If we have a hard winter with low temps I may lose it. Depends on the tree really, tropicals like banana I would wait until spring. Doc, I don't know where the university area is in Tucson but there are two nurseries there that I like. Mesquite Valley Growers - Speedway and Pantano and Desert Survivors on Starr Pass near I-10. Desert Survivors is run by disabled vets who start lots of native trees, bushes, plants. Mesquite Valley is very upscale. If you want cactus plants you cannot miss with Bach's Cactus Nursery, Thornydale north of Cortaro Farms. HTH.

Tomorrow (Sunday) it's supposed to be up into the low 60s and sunny, so I am going to plant the above mentioned bulbs and etc.. This afternoon while I was outside hauling rocks, my Blue Tick Hound dog, Bonnie Belle, got one of the bags off the table, and chewed it up. I don't know if she ate any of the bulbs, but I only found three. The kittens may have batted them under the sofa. Don't know where the rest ended up. That concerned me, but she didn't get sick. Man, there was dirt all over the carpet and floor! She likes to chew up plastic bags. She must have had one swell time. What a mess!

When is it a good time to replant or relocate plants?

For Zone 9, you can transplant many things year-round, though during the summer you will need to stay on top of transplants and make sure they stay moist. But they get less stress from September through to April. Tender plants should be planted sooner rather than later. If they are transplanted any time after October, it is possible they will not establish themselves enough to survive a light frost. If they do not get transplanted before November, it might be better to wait until March. Hardier perennials and deciduous could wait until they go dormant, they will get less stress this way and you won't have to be as worried about watering. A good layer of mulch around the root zone will help modulate the soil temperature and minimize temperature swings. However, in my experience, the absolute best time to do transplanting is when a Tropical Storm is coming. A week of steady rainfall is the best thing for transplants!

Thank you both for the tips and advices, I'll plant it this week, hopefully now that I have a better idea of what to do I will not kill it.
