NEED help styling my living/dining rooms and kitchen!

So, I have closer to medium than light hardwood floors, a functional sectional leather couch set, with a matching large ottoman. ive got more of an open, formal layout for my living room and dining, but it's all one big space.

I have all dark wood furniture. My color scheme so far that I've developed in the dining area is a mixture of your neutral, olive green, with shades of darker green throughout, and getting as light as a pale yellow, with a variety of gray colors, deep rustic, mohagony/red, and a handful of neutral, teal/turquoise/ocean colored blues!

My kitchen also opens up to the living and dining room space and is very large, with dark brown cabinets and traditional styled granite with shades of bege and light brown counter tops.

So- my dilemma is what paint colors I should choose to incorporate into my scheme that will help tie it all together?! What's the "rule of thumb" when it comes to your paint colors for an open, formal layout? With what I have, where the whole space is incorporated together, should I keep a consistent color scheme or is it frowned upon to have multiple colors on the different area walls....

In a nut shell, I feel like I have a good idea and plan when it comes to my actual decor/furniture/tables/accents, but I'm just feeling challenged with what colors to paint with that will tie it all together. And one last thing- I want a large area rug to place in my living room; any ideas or advice on the style and color??

Keep in mind that the color will look different if it is sampled on a painted wall. You should be able to mix colors and have it color matched--although depending on the skill of the salesperson, the match may not be perfect. We have done colors at 50%--I think that also depends on the salesperson as to how they do it. For us, we had SW softer tan mixed at 50% and it was just lighter than the original shade. I had sooooo many paint samples up--I did large portions of the wall in the samples--but having the samples side by side and doing them on top of our existing yellow walls really affected how the color looked and made it hard to judge how the end result would look. I ended up picking my favorite and painting as much of the wall as the sample allowed to get the best idea of how it would look. The svelte sage and grassland were definitely way too gray in my house. If you do a search, there have been other posts on greens--I know it was helpful when I was trying pick a green. I think I even had a thread and someone suggested a nice Behr color or maybe a lowe's color--it didn't work in my space as I needed to coordinate it with a tan adjoining wall--but it was nice--I just can't remember the color.

It would be possible to put a play corner in the first two drawings but not in alternative 2. I would recommend a corner of storage furniture to corral the toys. I am usually a fan of built-ins but not in this case because eventually the kids will outgrow their toys and you won't need that storage there anymore. The built-in exception would be a window seat under one of those windows on the plans. Some of the storage could be cabinets or bookshelves for bins or toys underneath a window seat. I'm not a fan for toy box style storage because they either become a black hole or the kids throw everything out of them looking for what they want and then do't put the rest of it back. As for the kitchen placement, near to the deck would be best in you like to eat outdoors on the deck or entertain on the deck. We entertain a lot and the kitchen is on the other side of the house from the patio. It's a real pain and a big part of my design brief for the architect was for the kitchen to be next to the patio. I even wanted a pass-through window from the kitchen sink to the patio for ease of clean up but unfortunately I wasn't able to work that out.

Just paint that trim! why try and match flooring to it? Do a little everyday, and within a month it will be done. seriously. paint for like, an hour a day. It's not a big deal. (make sure you clean them and prime them if necessary. I don't know if they're that 'plastic-wood type of molding or real wood) you only have 800 sq ft. not that much to do. leave the bedrooms if you want. You said you wanted an update. just throwing down LVP isn't really an update. So paint the trim! leave the doors if you want, as it looks fine w/white trim work. those melamine cabs can be painted, but why bother? check Craigslist for people practically giving away these solid oak cabinets and paint those. or try the Ikea. I've see people on craigslist sell an entire oak kitchen with granite and appliances for under 1K.

Sounds like a fireplace re-do might be a longer-term fix. In the meantime, I'd paint the mantle a dark brown, a similar colour to your end tables. It's not trim and shouldn't be white. It pops out too much in the white colour. Another idea that doesn't involve any ripping-out is to go right over the existing mantle using a mantle slipcover in wood. I would suggest looking for a beautiful rug that you love--it should have at least some of the colors you have already used in your rooms. Use the rug as in "inspiration" and tie-together piece. From your description, I think using your ocean blue in the kitchen area would be nice. What color are the existing walls? You would have to figure out if there is a good stopping point to switch paint colors.
