Needing a good sliding patio door...
Comments (45)We will replace 2 sliding glass doors (72"x80") with metal frames, likely original to our 49-yr-old house, because they've fogged and one is hard to move. Our contractor recommends Viwinco and the distributor he sent us to seconded that and showed an S-Series unit (vinyl clad exterior & interior) with Northern Zone glass pkg. We also looked at Anderson Narrowline 200 Series. Is Anderson worth the additional cost? Online I read mixed reviews of Viwinco, all at least 5 years old, along with recommendations for Sunrise (no local dealer in NE Pennsylvania) and Okna. Okna is carried by big box stores but I don't know what model to look for. At our "advanced age," we don't know how long we'll remain in the house. What do you recommend?...See MoreAndersen SmartSun Glass ???
Comments (26)Just to follow up on this. I'm very happy to report that I'm pleased with my choice to go with the SmartSun option. As I said, I have SmartSun on every window in the house. They are Anderson 400 casement windows, BTW. The only exception is my sliding patio door which in Anderson A series without smart sun. I didn't go SmartSun with my patio door because it is facing the north/east and under a large covered patio so the Sun will never be glaring directly into it. Anyway, if I stand back about 12-15 ft, I can look out the patio door (without SmartSun) and a window (with SmartSun) at the same time. I have to really concentration and think about it to tell a difference. Even then, I'm not really sure I see much of a difference... barely noticeable I guess. If anything, I think I noticed a reduced glare on the SmartSun more than I noticed decreased light coming in. I think SmartSun cost me roughly $25 for my smallest windows and $50 for the largest windows. I hope someone finds this info useful. BTW, the plastic coating on the windows pealed right off despite baking in the Sun for several months....See MoreBuyer Beware: Black Andersen 400 Series Casement Windows
Comments (85)Dealing with a similar sutuation. New build with same windows. I was a little surprised when i noticed the exterior mitre joints, as mine are identical. One thing i know for sure is that “damage” you think is from the factory is 100% from the installer. Mine were installed with way more damage. Aside from the major damage, I did have those scuff/scratch type marks all over several of mine as well, the good news is - they literally wipe off with a decent amount of elbow grease. I was happy when I realized it wasnt permanent....See MoreQuestions about window quotes in West Michigan...
Comments (45)David, I really wanted to come back here and say I got the windows I wanted, but we went with the Alside windows instead. We really just didn’t have a good feeling about the other companies & I knew that other people just paid half what they were wanting to charge us. I know it’s probably the busy season, so they can do that, but I can’t buy something from someone I don’t feel good about, no matter how good the product. The guys just started this week and will be back Monday to put in the replacement windows and finish everything up. So far, I’m really happy I went with my gut. The windows are not even good looking compared to the other windows we saw, but they are worth what I paid and I definitely did not feel like the Pella‘s or Andersen’s were worth what they quoted. The guys doing the work have done an excellent job on the construction portion so far and they are clean workers & very respectful. So far with just one window and a sliding door replaced our house is holding a steady temperature and it never did before. You couldn’t sit in the dining room in the summer without breaking a sweat. You can’t even feel the heat now. So basically, we’ll hang curtains and shades like we did before, you won’t even see most of the windows. If these windows don’t leak and last a few years, we’ll be happy for the price we paid & we paid what the other companies quoted for the construction alone:/...See MoreWindows on Washington Ltd
