I am assuming you have a submersable pump. Unplug the pump and pull it out. Remove the intake hose and the protective ring around the impeller. See if there is any debris caught in the impeller. Make sure it rotates easily. If it does not, Pull the impeller straight out and remove the thread or hair or plant material that is wrapped around the impeller shaft. I have had to cut some of it out and the really fine stuff is hard to see. I suspect the very long blond hair I found in the impeller was carried to the pond by birds or else we have mermaids. It is not likely there is any debris in the output hose but check for a pinched or kinked hose. Put the impeller back firmly. Keep it straight and make sure it rotates easily. Put the protective ring back over the impeller. Reattach the input hose after making sure it is clear of any debris or kinks. Even if you did not find something blocking the hoses or impeller you have done a routine maintenance that needs to be done several times a year. Put the pump in the water and plug the pump back in. If it doesn't work now, you probably have a damaged or burned out pump but I guess it will work just fine. We would enjoy seeing pictures of your pond. Sandy

patriciaiowa, You are right most hostas need shade or at least partial shade (in my experience). I have read where people will plant Leyland Cypress in a staggered line, in order to help with wind break, and they grow very fast. Keep in mind they get very big, so plant accordingly. I had one Leyland Cyress in my yard, it grew very, quickly, and I did like it alot, but when we had a hurricane come thru and flooding, it knocked it down, but hopefully you will not have to worry about that. You could also plant fast growning evergreen shrubs in the area, many are fast growning, and they are nice to have in the winter since they keep their leaves and you will have something green to look at. Hi. Can you give me the dimensions of your pond? Length, width, depth. Approximate is fine. Koi CAN get up to 3 feet long if given everything they need. Both koi and goldfish breed worse than rabbits. So be prepared to find homes for babies. Ideally when adding new fish to a pond they should be kept in a quarantine tank/pond for at least 3o days before adding to your existing pond. BUT most people don't want to wait that long. Quarantining your new fish helps prevent bringing any parasites to the pond and possibly killing your existing fish and prevent you having to spend a bunch of money on meds to rid your fish of the parasites. Now for the fish in the bucket. I hope they are not still in that bucket now. If so I hope you have a filter and air for them. If you want to keep your fish healthy and happy please get a fresh water test kit and test your water. At minimum you will want tests for Ammonia, PH, Nitrites. There are other test available : KH , GH, Nitrates, salt, ....Those are basics. Ammonia should always be zero PH between 7-8 Nitrites 0 Sorry, I could ramble on all day about the world of ponds, koi & goldfish. If you have more questions just let me know.
