Proper way to paint stained woodwork / trim white?

We recently purchased a 1940s Colonial with natural, stained woodwork throughout. We are planning to paint all of the woodwork white using a semi-gloss BM white. The existing trim has a very slight sheen to it but is in no way glossy, etc. so I don't believe it would even need a light sanding. From my minimal research I think we would first need a primer coat (Kilz or Gripper) and then 2 -3 coats of the BM semi-gloss white. Does this sound about right?

We've painted woodwork in previous homes (newbies) without the primer step and noticed slight chipping over time so we're trying to do it right this time around. We also had a quote for trim only (around windows, doors, riser of steps and a couple of bookcases) come in at $8,600 for labor and supplies for our 4200 sq ft house so we're tackling it ourselves slowly and steady instead of outsourcing at that cost ;)
