King palm in California rain..
Comments (10)Maybe I read the stats wrong but W.U. sez that Hayward has had .40 inches this month..seems low to me for all the times it has rained. Our usual whole month of April ave.runs about 1.30 inches. J, The Brugs are Charles Grimaldi-usually are evergreen, every other year. This year a 33 and 34 defoliated them mostly. The tallest has reached about 14' with a nice sized triple trunk. But I prune them hard or they would shade much wider and right to the ground. And as you can see they have releafed and are blooming again. And what I thought were Rhopalistylus palm seeds, came up Chamedorea microspadix. Nice, but not nearly as nice as the Shaving brush palms darnit....See Moreheavy rain wet carpet
Comments (12)I'm in CA. too I used to get a little rain in my kitchen couple of times a year but not rest of time & just put a towel down, couldn't figure it out & then 1 day it was beating against the door so hard, I opened it & it seemed like it was raining sideways(wind was so strong). Knowing the problem since almost all storms blew from opposite direction causing no problems, I made habit of checking to see direction of rain & if I had to be gone laid down a thick towel.(This was a new house on concrete slab. )I finally decided to get a metal awning as sun beat on kitchen side most of day. I discovered it keeps any rain from coming in the house. So that solved my problem....See MoreMore Rain for California
Comments (22)I live at the southern end of the Sierra Nevada’s at just under 3000 foot level we have had rain and mostly snow since last Thursday it been a real beautiful mess. Haven’t seen this kind of weather for years. We have lost 2 trees and several big branches off our oaks. Our driveway is long and steep so we have been kinda stuck until this afternoon when enough snow finally melted to get down it. The lake here has more than doubled in the last 3 weeks and is now over 200,000 acre feet. The local ski resort is closed today due to to much snow. There are only 5 ways out of this valley and now only 2 are passable, with chains required, the main road down the canyon will probably be closed for days due to rock slides. I feel sorry for the Cal Trans guys trying to clean it up. People are complaining that they can’t get out but I always remind everyone that not one person who moved up here didn’t know that the road in and out were dangerous and probably never going to be improved. The local market will run out of beer and bread for a few days. The river through town is raging the creek outside my bedroom window sound like Niagara Falls. I love it!...See MoreOctober week 3, precious little rain
Comments (41)I'm still waiting on my garlic. I sent Irish Eyes a FB message. Hopefully it will show up soon. I can use some the Inchelium from this year if necessary. In fact, I will use it as well as the Nootka Rose IF I ever receive it. I was able to get recycling taken in, groceries purchased, and my work out done this morning. I have a lot of little things to do today, but am having a hard time. Feeling like I don't know where to begin. Maybe after a sit I'll get my head together. I'll have a few hours alone at home tonight so that will be nice. My blood work came back great. Even my Vitamin D was really good. That's from someone who rarely eats any type of meat and covers up in the sun like a vampire. I've been taking a K2D3 supplement. However, my cholesterol is high--even the LDL (bad cholesterol). Suggestions: eat less red meat, exercise more, eat more vegetables, and lose 10 lbs. This is so frustrating! I don't ever eat red meat. Most of what I eat IS vegetables. I exercise several times a week plus walk the dog almost every day. And, over the past couple of weeks I've been very strict with my diet anticipating the holidays (and bread baking). I've lost a couple of lbs, but would have to eat near nothing to continue to lose more weight. My weight currently is 118. I guess, I'll continue to watch my diet strictly because I do not want to take medication. I would like to weigh 110. I haven't weighed that since before my second pregnancy. Just losing those pounds will be brutal though. I do eat eggs--maybe 5 a week, so I'll cut that back to one every other day. There's so much nutrition in eggs plus it's been a source of protein in my nearly meatless diet. I will continue to eat yogurt at least 5 times a week. I'll cut cheese back to a rare treat. I'll keep eating salmon/tuna once or twice week. And, honestly, those are the only things that I eat that have cholesterol. Oh and maybe a teaspoon of butter on my toast on the days I eat an egg. For people without high cholesterol, it's recommended to eat under 300 mg. And people like me should keep it to under 200 mg. I think that is very doable if I stagger eating the fish on opposite days of eating an egg. I still don't think that is enough protein. I'll have to do a better job of eating quinoa and lentils, etc. Maybe fix up a batch each week to eat on for a few days. This week I started taking a collagen powder. Does anyone know if that has cholesterol in it? Tom read that collagen can help with feet issues, so I started taking it. But it was after my blood work. Anyway....I'm just venting because this is SO frustrating to me. Other garden things.... It does appear that most of the peppers made it through the frost without damage. The top half of the roselle got nipped, but not the bottom. Same with some of the larger overgrown tomatoes. I'm afraid that these hotter days are causing the lettuce to get bitter before it's even gotten a chance to grow well. Maybe I can find some starts at Lowes if that is the case. Does anyone have a favorite determinant tomato? Particularly a paste tomato?...See Morestanofh 10a Hayward,Ca S.F. bay area
