Why home composting is a hassle and expensive (my experience)

I’ve been composting for about a year now, so here’s my rant
based on my experience.

My household produces 2 – 2&1/2 grocery size bags of
greens every week. My policy? Compost all that waste. I started composting last
fall, so I collected as much as leaves as I could. I was new to composting, so
I didn’t know how much to collect and store. But I collected some. I used a
large container to compost the greens and browns.

So far, composting didn’t cost me much. Mom was not happy to
collect all the greens (mainly fruits/vegs) instead of conveniently throwing them
in the garbage, but she got used to it.
It reduced half of the garbage waste. Yay for the environment. By spring, I was
running out of space and eventually I had to buy a $100 tumbler, the cheapest
one (YIMBY IM4000, 37 gallon). City paid me back half of the cost or 40%, so
that was good. But family didn’t like it. They said it takes space and said it’s
just extra junk stuff in the garden. Traditional composting (compost heap on
the ground) is a no-no. Takes too much space in our somewhat small garden, and
it may attract animals. If that were to happen, there is a risk that family
would never allow me to compost again. Take out the greens every other day or
every day sometimes. Grab some browns from the shed. Turn the tumbler. Cover tumbler
before it rains. Ouff, it’s a hassle.

Of course the $100 tumbler was too space, so again I was
running out space. And you have to eventually buy another tumbler anyway because
you have to let the other one “cook.” Instead of buying an expensive one, I
bought a $15 55 gallon barrel and decided to make one myself. I bought all the
material. Some cedar wood. Lots of bolts, screws, handles, hinge etc. Oh, I read that they can rot easily. I’m
no expert, but I decided to just get stainless steel quality. So the whole
thing probably cost me $80. Family said it looks ugly and takes too much space.
They complained that it’s just extra junk stuff in our garden, why do you do
this, etc.
