Italian Cypress browning near bottom around brick

James Reeves

I have several Italian Cypress that I've planted when they were only about 3 feet tall. Over the last 10 years they've grown to 20+ feet tall and have been fairly healthy for the most part. However, over the past couple of years I've noticed browning and thinning near the lower half of the trees. I looked for bugs but saw none. They get plenty of water. The only thing I can figure is that it's because they rub against the brick when the wind blows, or the heat radiating from the brick is causing the branches to dry out. I'm in Houston, TX and temps get into the high 90's. I've included a picture. The top isn't visible in this image but above the edge of my roof, the tree is green and full. Also, all of my cypress that are near the house look like this.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.
