My old Kenmore still worked after 12 years but the vinyl tips on some prongs as well as the low points on some racks had worn off after about 5 - 7 years. I ordered a vinyl repair kit but after reading the hazards, etc. never opened the bottle. The exposed metal spots rusted and left a few permanent marks on some of my white dishes. If you want to be economical, but have a lasting dishwasher, just focus on a quality washer with nylon racks and cut back on the cycle and rack options. My sister has a KA from the 80's that is still cleaning well and the nylon racks have no worn spots! My new KA has nylon racks. These racks also seem to hold the dishes a bit more firmly in place so I have less rattling. Or, maybe it's just the little bumps that you place glassware on that keeps them from rattling.

I think 21 inches would be fine. I've seen as deep as 24 inches and this is alot of room.
