Fish wire or cable

So I’ve fished cable from the basement to the first floor, and from the attic down to the second floor. Easy enough once you get the hang of it, since both are unfinished (or partially in the case of the basement).

How do you fish between a first and second floor? Do you basically have to cut and repair drywall?

Yep.

But there are some tricks to minimizing the damage. Understanding what the structure looks like behind the drywall can help to find the optimal route and determining if there will be any obstructions in the way will also help (eg. HVAC ducts, plumbing, etc).

Sometimes the shortest wire route may not be the one that minimizes the damage. Wire is cheap so taking a longer route may be advantageous.

If you have big baseboards or crown moulding, then pulling that off and boring the holes through the studs to move the wire horizontally on the wall, then re-attaching the moulding can help minimize the plaster/drywall repair.

But ultimately, drywall repair is pretty easy unless you have a texture. So just punching holes and fixing them isn't that big a deal.

A few houses ago we were able to go from the basement to the 2nd floor up through a closet. The conduit was left exposed in the closet. If you can use that strategy to get cable from teh basement to the attic you can then come down from the attic anywhere you need to. I have also removed carpeting and pad, cut into the subfloor to expose the joists, drilled through joists and then come up where I needed to. Good luck

The way it's normaly done is have enough slack in the wire at each valve, then with a sharp knife open the wire casing and seperate out the individual wire for that valve as well as the common wire which runs to all the valves.

If you want a decent job, the cable guy is not the one to do it, they're not paid/cable co doesn't budget for anything less than a very basic job. Cable co ran coax on the SURFACE on the front of my neighbour's house. You get what you pay for. There are lots of clever ways you can retro cable wire. If the active outlet is on an outside wall, it's possible but not as easy. A media specialist or an alarm tech could do the job. Running under the baseboard is also a good option, you can either then fish it up into the wall, or install a baseboard outlet.

I don't know if it's permissible (and I don't think it looks as nice) but when wiring lv alarm wiring, we often cut off unused wires flush with the outer insulation. You will also see alarm, telephone and other lv wires with spares wrapped back around up the outer insulation. In 120/240 land, I'm sure capping is preferred. If one of the other conductors fails in the future, the 'spare' wire can be brought into service provided it's re-coloured at the ends to depict what it's doing, ie, red or black.

"3/3 cable is thick and very heavy. Good luck fishing that." Are you suggesting it's not a practical solution? Would it be worth trying? The way I see it there are 3 options: (1) Fish the cable if feasible, as discussed above. (2) break the finished ceiling, install the cable properly, and fix the ceiling. (3) Another option is to run the wire on the outside of the house. It can go straight out the wall where the panel is and then run along the side of the house at ground level about 20' towards the back of the house and then through the wall and into the part of the basement where the sub-panel would go. If option (3) is a good way to go what type of wire and conduit should be used? Can it be run at ground level?, installation details? Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. I'd like to know how a good experienced electrician would do this, i.e. go for option (1), (2) or (3)(or another option?) and how would you go about it. Thanks again.

I was able to use the area around the main sewer vent stack to get full access from basement to attic. I had to drill holes at in the attic and basement, and also removed some sheetrock to cut out around the area where 1st met the 2nd floor. (which was on the stair landing).

Then I ran four new 12/3 cables from the basement to the attic. I used one 12/3 for smoke alarms and one 12/3 for an attic A/C handler, and split out the other two cables as MWBC's and got four new circuits in the attic. Those circuits were used for bathroom GFCI receptacles, 1500 watt bath heater, and two wall receptacle circuits for the bedrooms.
