I can tell you from going through both H. RITA and H. KATRINA when I lived on the LA coast that you will need: water, prepared foods, cash, and gas. Our gas stations ran out of gas early and started rationing people to only $10 worth of gas during the evacuation. ATMs were shut down so if u had no cash u were outta luck. No electricity meant no water (for peeps with wells that need an electric pump), no restaurants, no electric stoves or hot plates for cooking. All stores were closed so no food,water, or pharmacy open. By the time Rita hit us after katrina all shelters were full so no shelters.

Solar lights frm the garden that u can bring inside at night for a safe light source come in handy. Make sure to have bleach (for water purification), baby wipes, and other cleaning supplies on hand. Also paper towels, paper plates, cups, silverware etc. really helps. We froze water filled pop bottles to put in the fridge and freezer to keep stuff cold during the power outtage. You can also put your electronics and important papers in ziplocks. Propane is good if you have a grill or camp stove. We thought we could go to a campground but they were all closed due to the storm so those will prob be closed in FL as well lol. Generators are good. We are pulling ours out and changing the oil and making sure it runs today. If you have pets or livestock be sure to save food and water for them as well. Extra batteries, and old school hand held walkie talkies are good because cell phone towers can get damaged. Pull out your muck boots or other water proof hard soled shoes. Stock up on deet or whatever insect repellect you need.

I sent this info to some of my friends and my daughter, and posted it on my FaceBook. . You may already know all these things, but in case you don't or maybe just need a reminder, I thought I would post them here. Here are a few tips I learned for hurricane preparedness when living in Louisiana: * Fill up your sinks and bathtub(s) with water. You might need it. If not, you can always use it to water you plants or something afterward.. * Make sure you have lots of new batteries for flashlights and radios. * Bag up some extra clothing, towels and blankets in case the wind damages your roof or windows, so you have some clean, dry towels and blankets. * Make sure you have an emergency medical kit with any prescriptions you have, aspirin, band-aids, triple antibiotic ointment, and etc. Sanitary napkins and duct tape make good emergency bandages for big cuts or gashes. * Unplug all unnecessary appliances to protect them against storm-surges in the power. * Put canned food and ready-to-eat foods in plastic tubs with secure snap on lids. Have plenty of bottled water to drink. Bagged fruit. Bag up seasonings, like salt and pepper, matches and emergency candles, toilet paper, and Duct tape. Plastic drop clothes are good to keep in your emergency kit too. They come in handy. * Include a can opener, spoons, butter knives, forks, &etc., and put them in the plastic tub. Paper or plastic plates and bowls too. (extra storage baggies, paper towels, baby wipes, and trash bags as well.) Bath soap, dish soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and a bottle of chlorine bleach are good to have in an emergency too. * Board up windows with plywood and screws if you can or have someone do it for you. It is worth the cost! This is so flying debris doesn't come crashing through the glass. * Stay as far away from all the windows as you can get when it hits. *Remember, it comes in bands, not just one big storm. So there will be a band of storm and winds, followed by a clearing, and then another band, and so on. Then the eye of the hurricane comes over and it looks so calm, you might think it is over, but don't be fooled. The back half will shortly start to cross over you, and exit your area also in bands like it came into your area. Also, make sure you charge up your cell phones ahead of time. Hope this helps. Earl didnt do much hear either. Yesterday was pretty cloudy but it wasnt very windy and it rained only for a minute and it was just a drizzle. I dont think any measurable amount of precipitation actually fell. Today was really nice! I prefer the heat, but the wind and temperatures were perfect. The animals liked it too since I actually saw 2 hummingbirds flying around as soon as I looked out into the yard and this is the first year I have ever seen hummingbirds here. Really just a nice day and it looks like a cool night on the way. This is the first night that has reached the upper 50s since probably June. Its definitely the start of fall, but at least the AC gets a break! Heat returns next week for a few days with temps close to 90, but the heat waves now arent as warm or as long. Fall is here, or at least on the way. The plants are still growing well though! Laura, Im glad you didnt have any damage there! I was a little worried when I saw some of those wind speeds! Those plumerias are probably the first plants to be broken in high winds so Im glad yours had no damage! Earl is a thing of the past and hopefully no other hurricanes will threaten for the summer, but hurricane season is far from over and there are somethings in the Atlantic that have to be watched! Before you premake plywood pieces you need to find a suitable place to store them flat so that they do not warp. A visit to any big box store in hurricane areas will give you several methods for attachment, some more aesthetically pleasing than others. I second the advice to simply get shutters or a panel system installed. They are not overly expensive and many are quite easy to put up and take down. I had a panel system installed and as an older lady I was well able to put them up alone. If you are new to hurricane areas it is the putting up and taking down that is the kink in the plan and the part that you have to do over and over and over each time a storm is forcast. Finding a way to make it easy is key- if it is too difficult you will skip it when you are not certain that you will get a direct hit and you will wait too long to begin. If you lack or misplaced parts everything grinds to a halt. An easy system makes it a very simple task to protect your home. It is an investment that will serve you for the entire time you own your home and again, not that expensive.

As a resident of SE Fla for over 30 years I will try to answer some of those questions. It really comes down to a few things. The 'veterans' who have been through at least one good storm will usually be very prepared. They will typically have some sort of hurricane shutter for their house and have a stock of supplies before the season starts in June. My personal opinion is things come down to 3 things - 1. New residents and 2. Money (what a surprise) and 3. Denial. With 1, these people may be new to the area and are not familiar yet with what to do, etc so they follow along the advice and guides that are published. With 3, some people still think 'It can't/won't happen to me' so they do absolutely nothing until the last possible minute. These are the people that suddenly say 'oh crap, I better do something now and they run out and buy plywood, etc" With 2, some people just don't have the means to protect their houses properly, hell, too many people here have a hard enough time just keeping their houses out of foreclosure. Like everything else, hurricane protection/shutters, etc are not cheap, so some people play the odds and hope they can get by without it and if stuck go out the last minute. Plywood is one of the worst things to use, it is HEAVY and clumsy to store and install. And yes, after it gets rained on and wet alot, it will warp, etc and with expansion/contraction you sometimes can not get it installed quickly. I don't know of too many people that actually use/depend on plywood as an annual protection system, it is usually used as a last minute 'oh crap' solution. Some people in a hurry even actually use nails to nail it to a homes exterior and it usually causes more damage removing it then the whole storm did. Hopefully there are not many doing that any more. Generators are popular but again not afforded by everyone. And the uneducated sometimes cause more problems with them due to CO2 or wrong/defective extension cords, overloads, etc. So, anyway, I think most of the stuff you see in the media are the newbies or people in denial and don't represent the majority of educated Floridians.

It always shocks me how unprepared people are. I'll never forget when Charley hit Punta Gorda, people refused to leave their "stuff" or their pets. So many people died or were injured because they could not take their pets to shelters that the state changed the law to have designated pet-friendly shelters. I don't get it myself. We had three cats and 3 birds. When Charley threatened, we put them in the safest place we could find in the house and left. I heard of people putting their children in danger by refusing to take them to a shelter if they couldn't take their dogs. I'm not sorry to say that is just FN CRAZY!!! Get yourself and your family to someplace safe, pets or no pets. If you are so attached to your pets that you would put small children's lives at risk, you should have those children taken away from you.

You don't have to leave anyone. Put pets and kids in car and come to North Alabama. We're not going to get a drop of rain all week and all next week (and we really could use it).
