I've had a number of potted roses get the same exact leaves, usually the lower, older ones. We have gotten a lot of rain over the past week. They are in clay pots, in good organic, well draining potting soil. The pots have both a small amount of manure compost in them as well as Mills Magic Mix, and have been drying out just fine in between storms. They are very robust and blooming well. At first I was in a panic thinking virus. However, they don't have the typical virus look, and it has appeared on the virus indexed ones also. I think it is just a reaction to lots of heavy rain. As soon as I get enough time without fear of a lightening strike, I am going to give them some Mills liquid fertilizer. Sandy

For a reference on beans, here are a few things to think about. String Bean - old definition was any bean that had to have the strings removed as part of their preparation. String Bean - new definition is any bean that is consumed in the shuck usually by snapping them into lengths of about an inch. Pole Bean - Any bean that requires a support to grow on. You could grow a pole bean for snapping or a pole bean for green shellies or a pole bean for dried beans. Bush bean - any bean that does not require support to grow on. Bunch Bean - usually refers to a bush bean, but sometimes refers to a named variety such as Striped Bunch which is a pole bean. Runner Bean - sometimes refers to a pole bean meaning it has to have support, but also refers to the species known as runner beans. Generally speaking, true runner beans do not grow well in the deep south. Half Runner - usually refers to a bean that produces short runners up 4 feet long. The most famous of the type is the White Half Runner which has been pretty much ruined genetically by efforts to breed in disease resistance. These beans benefit from a support such as a piece of hog wire that the short runners can climb on. Interestingly, the half runner phenotype can be dated back to the days of the indians when it was one of the primary bean types grown. Cornfield Beans - refers to a bean that can be grown on corn stalks for support. These beans are usually very vigorous and tolerant of shade. There are numerous distinct varieties that are referred to as 'Cornfield Beans' to the extent that people argue over which one is the true Cornfield Bean. Butterbeans - depends on the part of the country you are in to define them, in the southeast, a butterbean is a sieva type lima. In other parts of the world, any lima bean is a butterbean. Some bush lima beans are known as butterbeans and others are called butterpeas. Are you confused yet? I grow some really old varieties of bean for pleasure and to produce seed. One of my greatest pleasures is to find a really old bean that still has ripcord strings. These beans tend to have exceptionally good flavor because they were selected to produce a bean instead of a green shuck. DarJones

Krista, I doubt you did anything wrong and think it likely that it is just the wind causing the issues. The wind here just isn't kind to anything these days....(sigh).....or most days. I usually don't stake bush beans, though at some times in the past I did so to keep them up off the ground. My ultimate solution was to plant more of them and plant them more closely together so they all hold each other up. That's one way to deal with it. They'll still produce fine even if lying flat on the ground, but when they fall over and lie on the ground, pests can climb onto the plants more easily. Bean plants that are lying on the ground also are more prone to foliar diseases. You can help prevent that by mulching the ground around them so that when it rains, the raindrops don't splash disease microorganisms up from the soil onto the plants. Now, as time goes on if you get all leaf and no flowers or beans that could be a sign of too much nitrogen in the soil, but if that is an issue, only time will tell. Sometimes the plants just make such good growth after rainfall or irrigation that they get topheavy and fall over. As the season goes on and the main stems get stronger, they usually won't fall over as much. I try to plant the bush beans in an area where they get some wind protection, but depending on how open your garden is to wind, that's not always a possibility if you're on flat, exposed land with nothing around to serve as a wind break. Well, there is no way to tell whether you are under-or over-watering, as there is no info given about moisture levels. o 5 holes from a 1/2 drill bit is plenty. o I prefer SuperSoil as there is no vermiculite in it, but it needs supplemental fert, like most potting mixes do IMHO; all my container soils are mixed by me and SuperSoil is the base. o The soil temp might be too high for beans and you may want to shade the pots - blue is pretty dark. I don't do pole beans in containers any more as they never work - too hard for moisture and soil critter control. Bush only if I do it. Dan
