Calling all budget minded, small kitchen owners-counter depth fridge!

We have a small kitchen and are doing a minor remodel, because of the size of our kitchen a counter depth would really open up the space. I have looked at all the different models and would love to have something with 22-23Ft inside. The LG is out due to the dispenser set up (child lock on the bottom and separate water/ice dispenser placement). I love the Samsung RF23HCEDBSR, the price, features and design, but I keep hearing about issues with parts and service issues. The Kitchen Aid KRFC302ESS is also a contender (all my other appliances are KA), but it is almost 1K more and the dispenser is inside the fridge and the ice maker is in the freezer door.
I am open to any other brands or suggestions, I just want something fairly reliable and easy to fix if needed. My husbands hope is Samsung, gaining more market share in the US, will make service and parts easier in the near future. Any advice would be great, thank you!

I would look for units on sale at your local appliance stores that meet your needs. We are happy with our LG and got it last year about this time for $800 off "regular" price (so it was about $1800).

I just bought and installed the KitchenAid counter depth french door fridge. Not the supersized one. I chose it for a couple of reasons bur primarily because it was one of the few I could get without a water dispenser in the front door (though there is a discreet one inside the fridge). I hated the fact that the counter depth added about a $1000 to the price tag and worried that I would not feel the aesthetic advantage justified that price difference once I got it since I was trying to be very frugal in my purchases. I was so wrong. I am crazy about this fridge. The bottom freezer holds everything my old full depth freezer did except I can see it all so easy in the lighted space with 3 slide out layers. I can see everything I have when I open the french doors. Nothing hard to get at. Nothing out of sight. The door shelves hold tons of stuff too. I like that the sides are gray....not black...so if some of the side had to show it would blend fairly well with the stainless. Mine will not show as there will be a full panel of cabinet wood covering both sides (cabinets arrive in 2 wks). I'm having an open shelf/cubby above it to hold cookbooks. Buy this unit with confidence.

Post a photo of the copy of the approved plan they were supposed to build to. Does it show deeper sides with the adjacent counters butting into them? Enough room for 24.375 plus the 2 inches behind so that the sides of the refrigerator BOX can be installed flush with the front of the cabinetry? Normally a cabinet shop would make this allowance or at least go over the options and differences. But if someone else did the design and it was adhered to, you don't have much to stand on. Also, is the opening the correct height because the hinges not fitting into the opening (like the photo above) can keep it from going back as well? Did you by chance consider another refrigerator that would fit properly? That might be the easiest and most economical way to address the issue. Switch them up and sell the first one. And to the guy that commented about "custom shops" ordering components, this is a common practice throughout the industry. It's very rare to find a cabinet shop that builds every part of a cabinet anymore and as long as what is ordered is of acceptable quality and fits, what's the problem?

I suggest doing your research on fantasy brown if you are considering it. It sounds to me like a marble. (Super white is another that is often billed as quartzite but is is actually usually marble.). Not that there is anything wrong with marble--I chose it for the ktichen in our last house, but I did so knowing what I was getting. Those countertop geology threads are really informative.

I wouldn't worry about what the future owners will be committed to buying in on down the line. If it looks great, it will be easier to sell. I can't imagine anyone thinking they don't want it because someday they'll be committed to a counter depth refer. If the wall isn't load bearing, also get a bid for taking it out completely and having a piece of wood (that matches the cabinets) added on that side instead of rebuilding the wall.

We have 2 Fisher Paykels at 2 different homes and they are under your price tag. Love them. One is 2 1/2 years the other about a year. No problems what so ever and extremely quiet. FisherPaykel

I am on my second Samsung SXS fridge, the RH22H9010. We bought it, owned it for 1 1/2 years, and loved it, no problems, then sold our house. We didn't even go shopping for other fridges, just ordered another identical fridge. So far, so good this second time, too. I love the counter depth, it is very quiet, I like the freezer storage, and the stainless is awesome -- no fingerprints.

Samsung is at the top of our list. Their 4 door, Frenchdoor fridge is a winner with the wife. Our short term issue is the height. It is taller than any other fridge of similar size that we have looked at. I would need to trim several inches off the cabinet box. Or just wait till we remodel. Probably next year. I was going to go with Counter Depth and suck up having to pay a premium. However after looking at the measurements I see that the Samsung is a bit shallower than some of the other offerings. If I remove the drywall behind the fridge I can fit a full size fridge. The fridge maybe pushed back against the stud. But that is just a small bit of the back for the fridge. There will be plenty of room for airflow.

One of the things I do not like about the Samsung we are looking at is that the fridge drawers do not have humidity control.

I know some people have real issues with the Samsung and will not consider one based on the comments made online. However every fridge we have looked at has a similar series of complaints.

My feeling is you either roll the dice with something that is on the market today. Or you wait and hope the next models released are better. I am not sure there is a safe choice these days. Well maybe a SubZero and the like if you are willing to spend the money. I loved and miss our SZ. Unfortunately there is not room for one in the condo.

I second the suggestion about seeing if you can recess a standard-depth into the wall behind it. Standard-depth refrigerators are less expensive than counter-depth - and often by a lot!

I have a GE Profile counter-depth (water in the door, not ice) that has worked fine for over 8 years now - but...there must be something in our water b/c the overflow pan has turned green. If I had it to do over, I'd get one with the water inside, not in the door.
