Hey All - Old thread eh?! Well I got the Samsung french door counter depth fridge which is the FRG238 (identical to the more easily found 237 w/ only difference being that there's ice below in the freezer as well as in the door). It's only been a couple of days but so far - knock on wood - I'm CRAZY psycho in love. Granted I'd been using a 1990 18.2 cu. ft. freezer-on-top standard fridge w/ no space in the door for a gallon of milk and old-fashioned ice trays in the freezer! Also, the contractor doesn't start work on the kitchen (partial remodel) till Monday or Tuesday so until he arrives, I don't have the water and ice function yet...they need to hook the fridge up to the water from the basement I think. Anyway, I feel like a queen. Maybe most of you are used to such luxuries but I'm sure as heck not. I love how the freezer door handle bends up a bit when you pull on it - it makes opening it a lot easier. I love the two shelves and dividers in the freezer and the little skinny-things pop down tray by the door entry as well. I love all the adjustable shelves and how much SPACE there is compared to what I had before...and this is counter-depth! Only 4.5 or so more cubic feet but the layout makes it like it's 6 or 7 more cubic feet. I love that I could have 3 gallons of milk (or more?) in the door if I wanted. I love that the ice/water in door doesn't take up much room. I love the deli tray w/ its adjustable temp. settings. I love the digital display and the blue lights and cool chiming sounds. Love the child lock and door alarm and that I could turn off the ice makers if I don't need them (I think individually if I only want ice from in the door for example) and I love knowing that if we have more people over than usual we'll have extra ice since there are 2 ice-makers. I love how I rarely how to bend down anymore (I use the fridge space more than freezer). I didn't think I would, but I already love the wine holder and the pop holder. I love how quiet it is (haven't yet heard ice drop which I expect to be sort of loud - at least if the tray's open). And lastly, the look. It's so, so pretty. Ok. Now we wait. We wait and see how the water/ice will be. And then we wait some more and see how long it lasts before having problems. The reviews are great. Even consumer reports has updated their fridge ratings and gives Samsung high marks now. They don't mention this model for some reason but I think that's a fluke since the other ones they mention are identical except just not counter-deep - and also cause this particular model gets better reviews than any of their other models, everywhere else. Oh so btw I paid somewhere around $2300 at Lowe's when they just had a sale combined w/ my using a 10% off coupon. After that I paid another $200 or so for a 5 year warrantee. Lowe's is the only store, as far as I know, that offers the RFG238 (dual ice) as opposed to RFG237 which can be found at most other stores. Thanks - sorry this was so long.

Buffalotina, we have the same frig as SVS128 does and the condensation problem that I still need to address. It does seem to go away sometimes even with some veggies in the drawer but I am noticing it is back again. Overall, we really like the frig for the many reasons shared on previous threads... the most important is the enclosed long cool zone drawer making it possible to more accurately control the humidity there. We are pretty good about using the door handles and thus the prints are right there and easy to wipe up. I would recommend getting the extended warranty because parts do not seem to be inexpensive on repairing any appliance these days. Also, on any frig you should purchase but especially this one, plug the frig in before the service people leave and if it is making any amount of loud noises, DO NOT LET THEM LEAVE because you have a bad frig. That is the problem we had and if our first delivery crew had been honest, well, it would have made our lives a lot easier. We have the Electrolux French Door no ice in the door model that ends in 36 with the Cool Zone drawer. Good Luck!

All of you are so fantastic-- I seriously don't know what we'd do without the help of this forum. It certainly wouldn't be a DIY project, and we'd be spending twice as much to get a kitchen half as good! So THANK YOU all for the time and consideration you put into answering questions. After reading through these posts, I'm convinced to go with a full-size fridge. I just can't stomach paying more for something smaller, and as sue pointed out, I think a CD could backfire worse if a family moved in and needed more fridge space. FWIW, I live in a mature, gated, lake community with homes from 30-years-old to brand new, and $150K to $700K. Pretty eclectic! We live in one of the least expensive homes-- 3 beds, 2 baths, built in '94, with one of the biggest yards in the neighborhood. It has fantastic resale potential, but my hideous kitchen (posted it several months ago but can't find the post) it white linoleum with really odd/crappy white cabinets, white laminate countertops, and brass hardware. Awful layout. In my size home in this community, our potential buyers could be anywhere from a retired couple looking to downsize to a young military couple with one or two children. So even though we don't necessarily need the fridge space, the next people might! wa8b: the layout issue you mentioned is certainly a potential problem as far as traffic flow. Behind the peninsula is a dining area, and to the left of the fridge/pantries in my drawing is the living room entrance. We were originally trying to keep the appliances situation close to where they are now to avoid added costs, but now that we've decided to stick with an electric range (even though we'd rather have gas), the potential to easily move the non-outside-venting range is definitely an option. However, my drawing represents where the stove and sink are currently located, and I've never had much of a problem traversing the 7.5' of space... Also, I like the idea of keeping the drawer bases for pots and pans on either side of the stove. But maybe I should referse the fridge/pantries and the stove/counters. The room would be more open when walking in, and the stove wouldn't be right next to the garage door. I'll probably post a separate thread about layout to discuss this... caryscott and raehelen, thank you so so much for the photos and drawings! It helps a great deal to see my potential options. caryscott, I can see that a non-CD fridge does not stick out that far, and the gray sides definitely make a difference. For those of you who described the logistics of recessing the fridge into the wall, thank you so much! This MIGHT be a possibility-- we'll see how comfortable DH is with the idea. :) Again, you've all given me a lot to think about-- I really appreciate all of the feedback! Katie

I wouldn't worry about what the future owners will be committed to buying in on down the line. If it looks great, it will be easier to sell. I can't imagine anyone thinking they don't want it because someday they'll be committed to a counter depth refer. If the wall isn't load bearing, also get a bid for taking it out completely and having a piece of wood (that matches the cabinets) added on that side instead of rebuilding the wall.
