Need Help...Asbestos Flooring in Basement
Comments (2)Asbestos floor tile is not generally brittle to a large degree and asbestos is only dangerous if you inhale it into lungs. I would just get a n95 dust mask pick up the lose tiles and burying them in the yard as it is a mineral and not subject to enviornmental problems and quite often buried in landfills around here. Since its a basement I assume it is a concrete floor underneath and the adhesive is holding the tile firmly in place go ahead puts some floor patch down to cover the area tiles are missing I am not familar with the flooring you are putting down but most plank flooring I am familar with do not use adhesive or fasteners check your manufactures recomendation. Comments (8)Thanks so much glennfc. You have made me feel much better about the tiles. I just have one more concern now that I have been reading more about asbestos. We have a stucco ceiling in my living room and I have just now read that it may contain asbestos. It has been painted so hopefully that is keeping it in. Does anyone know the chances that a stucco ceiling from the late 60s would have asbestos? My husband drilled in a fire alarm and a light fixture years ago. Do you think that that exposure could have harmed us? My son would have been about 2 at the time. Im sure he would have wiped up anything obvious but it may have got into the air?...See MoreIssue with subfloor on a slab with asbestos tile
Comments (2)just a question for you. There are different types of osb board. Did you determine that the one your installing is a approved subfloor for the hardwood you wish to install? I can't really comment on the asbestos issue but you may want to check with an asbestos abatement firm to see if drilling affects the asbestos....See MoreAsbestos tiles have been drilled into.
Comments (4)Once the carpet is down over the tiles, you dont have to worry about the asbestos tiles. However, it is something that you would have to disclose if you decided to sell, since you now know about them. It may mean you wont get what you should get when you sell. Its all up to you, what, you want, and can afford to have done to remediate them. Since you just purchased the property, it may not be the time, to have that done now, but, could be done later. You are perfectly safe, once it is covered over, with either wood look flooring, or carpeting. Have you actually had the tiles checked to see if they really do have asbestos, or are you just assuming they do....See MoreAnnie
