rooting Rangoon Creeper
Comments (5)Hello, this thread may have been from 2006 and it's 2022 now. May I add mine... I live in the Philippines with a zone of 11. I tried growing cuttings last year 2021 in the summer but failed. This time, I made it in cooler June when it is a rainy season and very humid and less hot. I make cuttings of green stems only, and make sure the cut is right under the nodes where new leaves grow, and that the cut should be clean, not using a dull scissor that may crush the tip. After, I add a drop of rooting hormone on the cut ends and immediately stick to the soil. I constantly mist them and keep away from direct sun, but in bright area. The roots appear within a week....See MoreRangoon Creeper question...
Comments (15)Winter?? What's that? We have only wet and dry season LOL. Mine started as a climber on the side of the house. We just prune it back to about 12' tall after it flowers. It sends out long, green wood branches with the aforementioned thorns which try and find a hold to climb. It is these which must be pruned to keep it under control. I prune it about every 3 or 4 months just to keep the long growths down and hard prune it after flowering. Then I give it a good feed and enjoy it for the next few months. It flowers here almost constantly but puts on a really heavy show every few months. I gave an offset to a mate who trained it over wires to grow up onto his garden shed and the roof of his verandah. This has reduced the daytime temperature of both by about 20 degrees. As long as I live in the tropics or subtropics this is one I will always grow. Good luck, Brendon...See MoreAfter 14 years it finally bloomed!!!
Comments (18)Thanks for the responses. I'm glad to hear that it normally blooms in the second year and that it will bloom after being cut back. Tammy sent a blurb from the tropical forum where a woman said she grew several Rangoon vines and those with less sun did not bloom much. This one doesn't get a whole lot of sun so that's probably why it hasn't bloomed before. Not sure why it decided to bloom this year -- maybe to tip me off to try it in a sunnier spot -- if I can find one. Omar, with so many trees in my own and in the neighbor's yards I don't really have a full sun spot to put the purple loosestrife in, but it's not as stubborn as the Creeper it's gonna' bloom anyway -- any day now -- can hardly wait :-) Thanks for the tip. I'll be sure to keep it in the pot, even though there are no soggy boggy conditions within many miles for it to escape to....See MoreRangoon creeper
Comments (9)It will survive. It's a strong plant. Mine did not bloom the first year nor the second year, but it only got a couple of hours of full sun. Discouraged and not having a better place for it I dug it up and gave it to a friend who forgot about it and it died in the pot. A full year later it surprised me by coming back -- I guess from a piece of root. It made a beautiful thickly foliaged plant, but took another two years for it to bloom with it's sweet tropically scented flowers, which start out almost white and then turn red. I've since freed up a sunnier spot for it and moved it this past winter so am expecting great things. It proved to be fairly drought tolerant after it was established doing fine on a once a week deep watering. It's not like you've got to run out and water it every day or it wilts. It was fertilized with a couple of the large Fertilome pellets once in the spring. Nurseries sell them for about .25 each. Photo of plant and flowers in it's too shady location. It makes a big plant so give it room. Nothing ever tried to eat it, not even the deer ......See Moreroselee z8b S.W. Texas
