Temporarily covering carpet

last modified: 8 years ago

This isn't exactly a decorating question, but hopefully the great minds here have some ideas.

My grandson's little school is in a temporary location (long story) which is wonderful, but the only place for the lunchroom is in a room with wall to wall carpet. We have tables and benches for them to use when eating, but the floor gets covered in food crumbs and debris.

I'd like to figure out something that can be put on top of the carpet that can be easily cleaned, that spills won't be able to leak through seams, etc. Ideally it would be very inexpensive, easy to lay down and take up, if they want to use the space during the day for other activities (like they have yoga once a week). The tables and benches fold up out of the way.

I looked at those rubber click together mats, but think they will be a problem because of all of the seams and not sure they'd lay flat on top of carpeting. I thought of sheet vinyl, but don't want the edges to curl and be a tripping hazard. Do you think we could duct tape the edges to carpet? I know that wouldn't be portable, but they could do yoga on the vinyl.

Would anything like sheets of fake wood wall paneling be sturdy enough to be walked on? ETA the kids are PreK-5th grade.

Any other ideas?
