Help with basement family room design...
Comments (10)Appreciate the responses, this site is always so helpful in generating ideas. cabinbuilder -- a corner fireplace would be nice, but I don't think it will work here. The long outside wall will be taken up with two large windows and a frenchdoor to take advantage of natural light -- which doesn't leave a lot of wall space remaining. We're also trying to tap into existing gas pipes/vents which only gives us the 2 end walls. But will noodle it around... Love the idea of cabinets near the game room. beaglesdoitbetter -- What beautiful rooms -- we have a similar fireplace to the first in our great room with a black granite surround. So hubby wants to do something quite different in the basement. LOVE the fireplace in your bedroom -- it's so unique. caminnc -- I did also think of candice olsen -- she does a lot of beautiful basements -- I will check out her stuff fnmroberts -- I'm going to try to get to the fireplace shop near us for some ideas -- good thought. I need to have tile for mudroom, paint and carpet choices by Monday so scrambling to try to get the full picture. Afraid if I delay the contactors at all, I may not see them again for a month. Good for you to do your basement yourself -- you do beautiful work. I will ask about sound insulation for utility area -- I hadn't thought about that. I made the mistake of telling my husband he could do whatever he wanted in the basement -- now having a hard time keeping my word on that. We usually have different visions but can come together in the end. People complain that their husbands don't have any opinion on decorating -- mine definitely does. Luckily he has good taste!...See MoreAm I on the right track w/ living room?
Comments (30)Love the MCM vibe you seem to be aiming for, but I agree that leather is a great solution for dogs and young (as well as us older) people. Depending on the quality, finish & color, I've had leather wear well for decades. I'm not wild about having the TV face the front door so I'd consider placing it between the windows where the sofa currently resides, having the loveseat remain where it is with a console table behind it, placing the larger sofa on the original TV wall with enough space behind it for a low book shelf perhaps, and adding two small swivel MCM chairs or two rockers or a combination of the two styles flanking the FP so that you have conversational grouping and can opt for FP gazing. Pulling furniture away from walls invariably helps ground even very small spaces. This placement encourages multi-usage of your living space, and you can use your existing furniture until you find the more or less perfect replacement pieces over time. Since you like MCM, try to find vintage as the construction is almost always vastly superior to what is available today, across nearly the entire budget spectrum except for the truly high end. If that placement appeals to you, then my preference would be to bury the wires in the wall and hang the TV above the dresser. If for some reason you prefer to rest it directly on the dresser that can work as well, but try to hide all the cables and wires in a chase. They typically sell these cable chases at big box stores though you may find a better price one line. As far as a mantle, since your FP can be appreciated from your DR also, if you add any mantle you might consider a wrap around one. Frankly though, since the space appears small and you have young people who might energetically use the area, I'd be more than a bit worried about someone smacking her/his head on a projecting mantle. It is appropriate for MCM FPs like yours to not have a mantle but still have art of some kind (Jere style metal sculptures or more typical canvases) displayed 5' or so above the floor. Once you have the seating layout figured out, you will have a better idea of the type and style coffee table. Some unexpected MCM shapes such a a free- form kidney (which may have one length straight) or other non-right-angles geometric shapes may help soften the room. I'd be inclined to wrap that mirror in some lively and lighthearted colors and patterns even if just done as a temporary treatment that can be changed at whim. (Pullog's beautiful whimsical kitchen tile comes to mind. You can wander over to the kitchen forum and search to see if that appeals.) Lots of us GWers know that Ebay, Goodwill and estate sales may provide the perfect furniture solutions with a very high-end value at a reasonable budget but it requires a bit of patience to find your bliss as pieces are usually acquired over time. That's a great solution as it allows your vision to expand over time. Enjoy your new home!...See MoreProblem with fabric on new sofa order!
Comments (19)Better Pictures below: budge1, I did find a nice velvet, but with a 6 year old, and lots of family members w/small children... I think I would end up hating it. Anyone hate footprints on carpet!? I d, and some fabrics remind me of that and it would drive me nuts. annie1971, thanks. I really am not concerned at all about the pillows - just the big expensive sofa! The chairs and sofa are actually from 2 different companies. This picture is more accurate in colors/texture . The sofa picture is a soft chenille. brutuses, thank you. The chair fabric is from Huntington House... and I love it too and feel comfortable with this, but with the difficulty I am having finding a sofa fabric... I am doubting my selection! Les, as always - thank you for your help! I have included (pic below)a great strip fabric that I found that I was thinking of adding for pillows. What do you think? Squirrel, what will I ever do without you!? You have such a great memory of my on going project! First, the fireplace width is only 66" (should have been 76-78")I need to play around with this area more, but as I see it now - it will look odd because it will end up tall and narrow. (does that make sense?) but the pre-fab ones will not work at this point, because all the legs are too short. As far as lighting - I have only purchased the bathrooms so far - so that is open to change, but I definitely want a warm, light bronze color or a silver bronze color. I am in Florida now, and I have seen both warmer tones as well as darker - and like both. Living with one or the other.. hard to say! Previous homes, I have had brown/beige and it was okay, favorite sofa I had was a solid chenille green, light the green in the chair fabric. I did love that room - it felt cozy. In the 80's I had my first new sofa - MAUVE - oh yuck, I hated it after just a few months! I don't "have" to purchase the furniture now, but since I already invested so much time, and I do need furniture to sit on (if I don't buy - room will be totally empty as the old is already gone). It takes 12 weeks ++ I really want to finish this! Oh.. and paint, I do just have a light neutral right now, but think I would change the paint to SW blond or restrained gold if I go with the new sofa color. gk5040 Thanks for your help too! This is another option... I like the color and color-wise is is almost the same as my first fabric. It is also a soft fabric, but look very close at the picture and you will see that it does have a light pattern to it (which is why I have initially voided it) Pattern has slanted lines /\ /\...See MoreMid Century-ish Family Room Help, Interior Design
