Comments (6)My mother grew up and was educated in Europe. She always included the chicken feet in making chicken broth. And I, as a child, hated seeing her put the feet in with the other ingredients...it sort of turned my stomach at the time! However, she DID make delicious, gelatinous stock. By the time the soup was on the dinner table, I forgot all about seeing the feet go into the pot. But, even now, I can't bring myself to use the feet in stock/broth making!...See MoreWhere can I buy "gritty mix" ingredients in Inland Empire or Orange Co
Comments (3)I used to use it but now we live on 1.5 acres and everything is in ground. Here is where I purchased stuff: LOS ANGELES / SAN BERNARDINO CALIFORNIA *** TURFACE MVP - 50# 12.50 bag , OR diatomaceous earth from an Auto Supply Store Tomark Sports 1180-A California Avenue Corona, CA 92881 800-959-1844 Try looking up Sporting good stores, or ask local highschools, colleges where they get their infield supplies. *** Crushed Granite Look up roofing companies. A lot of the ones near me carry grit. A-1 Grit manufactures the grit, and sells it to a number of companies through out the west coast. Call them and see if they supply anyone near you. 1-800-266-GRIT If you get A-1 Grit you want Size #5. Allco Roofing Materials 80# bag $5.75 8650 Garvey Avenue Rosemead, CA 91770-3269 (626) 288-2922 *** Fir Bark This was the hardest thing for me to find. Al really likes "Shasta Forest Products" and I called the company to ask for stores that carry their product. Kellogg Garden Products 8605 Schaefer Avenue Ontario, California Phone: 909-673-8065 I decided to use OF Wolfinbarger. It was more affordable. Its not Shasta brand. But it is Fir Bark. Comments (7)Just to step back a bit - humus is the end product of the composting process. It is black and crumbly with almost no odor - kind of like charcoal. And like charcoal it is almost all carbon. It is what is left when the bacteria and fungus have eaten everything there is to eat. Think of it like the picked-over bones on a skeleton. It has no nutrients (NPK) - however it's wonderful property is that it binds to nutrients and trace elements and holds them in the soil making them available for the plant roots to find. It takes years for dead plant material to make its way through the decomposition process to finally end up as humus. For that reason, it is very rare to find it for sale. (Few suppliers have the patience, space, and time to sit on material long enough for it to reach this end stage.) Consequently, most of what you see labeled as humus, isn't really. It's just finely sifted compost. In other words, it is still decomposing. While humus wouldn't be a terrible addition to an artificial soil, it would be expensive and not really add anything very useful. You don't need to hold nutrients in container soil because you are regularly fertilizing them. It is much more valuable added to organic garden soil beds where you want to prevent nutrients from falling past the roots and in to the water table....See More- 9 years ago
