I use the Vigoro perlite you have pictured for 5-1-1, and it's the perfect consistency. In my experience you want perlite that's on the larger side and relatively uniform, like little balls of styrofoam. Some brands--like your first picture--are too finely ground. (I'm puzzled btw by the one that claims to be "organic". Perlite is a mined volcanic glass--not sure how you make that organic.) Im not sure the mulch you posted is ideal, though I've never seen it. You want something made from pine bark. You don't want something with a sticky, shredded consistency. If you have an Agway near you (there's one in Waltham if you're from Boston?), they'll have a product called pine bark mulch in the spring that's pretty good out of the bag. Sphagnum moss won't work. It's too water retentive and won't disperse evenly. Any garden center should have peat moss--it comes packaged in a big compressed block. Home Depot will definitely have it, and they carry the Vigoro perlite too.
