need help confirming a ceramic tile for shower

Hi, does anyone know if this ceramic tile will work for shower walls. According to the vendor website it is fine for shower walls. But if you check the spec sheet, it has a very high water absorption rate of around 16% to 19%, my understanding is it should be below 3% water absorption rate for shower walls. So not sure who to believe. Thanks

It's definitely ok for shower walls. Not only ok, but encouraged.

You can use the softest of stones if you want. Vitrosity and water absorbtion rates will effect mainly dry cycle times as they retain moisture this is why when using these softer more absorbant materials its smartest to do so On A topically waterproof substrate VS cement board with a moisture barrier behind it. If you use youre shower say twice daily and its constanly unable to dry you can expect an overall more moist area and dependant on ambient conditions and fan placement perhaps a mildewy one at some point soon....A vaporproof or steam environ is really where you look for say <.05 % absorbtion. And a true porcelain content tile is always going to be the more reliable choice for wet areas. Glazed ceramics second.

The only problem with that is you'd have the raw bottom of the tile exposed. Also, if this is a glazed tile, you;'d also see the raw edge.

A diamond hole saw bit will be your best friend for this. They are a little expensive but the best way to avoid cracking the tile. I would recommend have a second pair of hands available with a spray bottle of some sort of liquid to spray the tile and keep everything cool, also to help avoid breaking the tile (alluding to Geoffrey's post about making a pool or bath).

That shower tile is a mess. It looks like thinset wasn't cleaned off the tile before grouting. I would rip it out and retile it. That tile isn't worth the effort of cleaning all the grout out and regrouting, that thinset will never come off without damaging the tile. The uneven grout on the wall tile is a result of the tile design. Is that what you are trying to show on the wall tile? Some of that tile was chipped before it went on as I have no idea how a wall tile can chip like that. Someone got a deal on tile and slapped it up. Those wall tiles are not tiles for a shower in my opinion. Both are ceramic tiles.

UPDATE April 2018 - Went to a family owned hardware store and spoke with several of the employees. I explained my problem. and at their suggestion, bought a spring-loaded heavy duty shower rod and some Gorilla double sided waterproof tape. These inexpensive changes did the trick and I didn't have to drill into the tile. Problem solved.
