Hi elbereth! My hyacinths from last year also potted are out of the ground just enough to see. I'm just leaving them be and I am guessing they will figure out what they need to do... I would say, if you have them in pots that you can manage, bring 'em on in and let them bloom! If they do bloom, please post photos for us! -Frank

WOW! I am so glad that I am not the only one! LOL! I bought some tulip bulbs last fall, and I was going to plant them in containers. However, I never got round to doing that. I left the bulbs in the unheated (but insulated) garage, which was in the mid 30's to low 40's during winter. About a month ago, I planted the bulbs in some containers, and now they are sprouting very well in the garage! My questions are: 1. When will it be safe to take the containers outside? It can still go to low 30's here at night. 2. How likely are they going to bloom this year, given that the bulbs were chilled in the garage? I am quite surprised by how well they are sprouting! I was just wondering the same thing. I am glad you asked. I found this also: Where to sow Outdoors in a open ground Site/Soil Open, rich, well drained, well dug. Lime if acid. Preferably manured previous Autumn, do not plant or sow on freshly manured bed. Avoid planting in an area where the previous crop was of the onion family. Sowing time: Spring sowing: February under cloches or March to April Autumn sowing: August (not advisable in cold areas) How to sow and aftercare Sow onion seeds in the Spring or Autumn very thinly in 1.2cm (½ inch) deep drills, leaving about 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12 inches) between rows. Thin Spring sown onion seedlings in stages to about 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches) \- make sure all thinnings are removed (they may be used as spring onions) to prevent Onion Fly attack. Thin Autumn sown onion seedlings to about 2.5cm (1 inch) in the autumn \- make sure all thinnings are removed (they may be used as spring onions) to prevent Onion Fly attack. Further thin the onion seedlings to about 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches) between plants in the Spring. (Close spacing will give smaller onions than wider spacings) Onions must be thoroughly dried before storage, if the weather is fine, the onions may be laid on the surface of the soil to dry naturally \- otherwise spread them out under cover to air dry. Vicki, do they survive the weather and soil, and keep blooming following years? I did buy most of them at 50-75% off, before Christmas, and could not resist, though most people around here do not plant them, and say they don't come back. i have made alot of of soil amendments, so hoping they will. After scouring all my books for a yes or no, I planted them w/o any, confident, giving them a good water soluble 10-110 fertilizer when the poke out of the ground. Some were already growing, close to 300, 30 holes, daffodils, tulips, muscari, and some lily of the valley in the part shade areas. It was a lot of work for just one shot, hoping to be WoWed by them for several years, at least.. The last ones were tucked in about 9:30pm tues, just before the tornadic weather came through and hit our little town, they are well watered in. I will let you know how they do, for futere reference for anyone else planting them last minute.
