Should I repair or replace my Viking cooktop?

I have the Viking cooktop VGSU102 (30" propane). Great stove, but after many years the electric ignition has now failed and I am told that it requires a new spark module assembly @ $448 plus labor to install it.

That cooktop model has been discontinued and replaced by VGC530, which has somewhat better features, and I think it sells for about $2,000 plus labor.

I would pay the premium to replace with a new one only if (1) the newer model is the same quality or superior, and (b) my older model is likely to start having other failures due to aging parts. Any intelligence about this?

I suggest posting in the appliances forum. I know they are not particularly hot on Viking these days. If you decide against repairing, I would consider the full range of options in all brands.

Part of your assessment must be made based on any countertop or mechanical changes needed to replace the cooktop. Don't underestimate these expenses, please.

What was your "repair specialist" indicating when he said the glass can be replaced? All single pane glass can be replaced, however, as Millworkman said, most older wood windows are not well suited to accommodate a dual pane IGU. The added thickness and required material removal from the wood sash often weaken the window to a point that is not acceptable to anyone else but the person selling the service. Fiberglass is a fine option but will come at a premium but may give you the look you are looking for. Good vinyl does not yellow so put that out of your mind for consideration.

Thanks, Jim! That’s what I was thinking. May not be worth the money and effort to replace the the tubing and whatever else it may need. We may just go with plain old soaking tub.

I also check craigslist to see if you can find your same stove in used but good condition and then you can begin taking parts from it.

I just went through this. A Viking cooktop only 6 years old failed. Some burners wouldn't ignite. Some didn't register that they were lit and kept clicking ad nauseum. I found Viking completely uninterested in standing behind their product. They crow on their website that they acknowledge their previous models had issues and have now improved due to Viking being acquired by a new corporation. But when I called to ask what specifically they had done to make it worth my while to invest in a new Viking cooktop no one could tell me anything other than they were now owned by a new corporation, and by gum that meant something! When I asked if they would be willing to offer me a replacement unit, or pay to upgrade the defective electronics, or at least give me a discount on a new model, they declined on all counts. I told them I would be happy to relate my experience with their company online — good or bad — and so that's what I'm doing. I ended up going with a DCS CDV-2365H and I love it — SO much better than the Viking. Build quality is great. High output burners. Incredibly low simmer on all burners. And it was $700 less expensive.

Having issues with my Viking gas cooktop instead of bake it starts broil it’s 16 years old is it worth fixing or get a new one
