Hearty plants for planters on concrete SoCal
Comments (5)I think domehome has the right idea: succulents. 16 inches square is a SMALL planter box and with most plants, you'll need to replce them often or at least put in lots of maintenance to keep them looking good. Here's some good succuelents for such containers. Some of these are spectactular when in bloom. Do "arrangements" within each planter: Aeonium haworthii âÂÂKiwiâ GOLDEN PINWHEEL Aeonium manriqueorum âÂÂZwartkopâ BLACK-HEADED PINWHEEL Agave âÂÂBlue Flameâ BLUE FLAME AGAVE Aloe âÂÂBlue Elfâ BLUE ELF ALOE Aloe brevifolia SHORT-LEAF ALOE Aloe vera ALOE VERA Cephalophyllum pillansii SPARKLING ICE PLANT Cistanthe grandiflora ROCK PURSLANE Cotyledon tomentosa BEARâÂÂS PAWS Cotyledon undulata SILVER RUFFLES Deuterocohnia brevifolia CLUSTER BROMELIAD Drosanthemum micans FLAME ICEPLANT Drosanthemum speciosum SHOWY DEW FLOWER Dudleya brittonii SILVER DOLLAR PLANT Dudleya farinosa POWDERY LIVE-FOREVER Echeveria agavoides HENS-AND-CHICKS Echeveria derenbergii HENS-AND-CHICKS Echeveria elegans HENS-AND-CHICKS Echeveria gibbiflora HENS-AND-CHICKS Echeveria pulvinata HENS-AND-CHICKS Echeveria runyonii âÂÂTopsy-Turvyâ HENS-AND-CHICKS Echeveria shaviana HENS-AND-CHICKS Echeveria âÂÂBlue Curlsâ HENS-AND-CHICKS Echeveria âÂÂBlue Horizonâ HENS-AND-CHICKS Echeveria âÂÂBarbillionâ HENS-AND-CHICKS Echeveria âÂÂBittersweetâ HENS-AND-CHICKS Echeveria âÂÂDondoâ HENS-AND-CHICKS Gasteria batesiana OX-TONGUE Graptopetalum bellum SUPER STAR Graptopetalum paraguayense SILVER GHOST x Graptosedum âÂÂVera Higginsâ GRAPTOSEDUM Hechtia marnier-lapostollei FALSE AGAVE Kalanchoe pumila FLOWER DUST PLANT Kalanchoe thyrsiflora PADDLE PLANT Kalanchoe tomentosa PANDA PLANT Lampranthus deltoides OSCULARIA Othonna capensis LITTLE PICKLES Sedum cauticoloa âÂÂLedakenseâ STONECROP Sedum forsterianum elegans âÂÂSilver Stoneâ SILVER STONE SEDUM Sedum glaucophyllum CLIFF STONECROP Sedum grisebachii ATHOS STONECROP Sedum seiboldii AUTUMN DAPHNE Sedum seiboldii mediovariegata VARIEGATED AUTUMN DAPHNE Sedum spathulifolium PACIFIC STONECROP Sedum spurium DRAGONâÂÂS BLOOD Sedum tetractinum CHINESE STONECROP Senecio articulatus CANDLE PLANT Senecio scaposus SILVER CORAL Yucca desmettiana RED YUCCA Joe...See MoreAdventures in Color and other short stories
Comments (25)Thanks everybody! Zeck, yes that is an Astroloba, good eye. Careful, mesembs will force everything else out of your greenhouse;) Rina, Thanks, I just organized before sowing seeds because I was running out of space. Yes the greenhouse is covered in shadecloth but with a plastic roof to protect from rain. Cold isn't a problem here so I go for maximum airflow. Mara, phalanxes, good word. Yes, the troops are all lined up. I have a feeling that carbuncled Echy will pup for me this year if you're interested. Howard, it looks like you guys are well on your way to IDing the Echy. I bought that one in a 4" pot when it was much smaller, pretty happy with its growth. Noto, glad you enjoyed it, now put your eyes back in your skull. Kathy, don't worry, all messes can be cleaned up. I had to organize or I wouldn't have had room for newbies. Now there's really no space left. Colleen, yeah it's really great to be able to get the Haws wet again. I lost a few this summer (no biggie). My experience with starting large-leafed Echeveria from leaves has been negative. They'll form roots but that's about it. I have 3 trays of various leaf-starts that are constantly producing for me so I have a pretty good base of comparison. It never feels right to remove a leaf that size from the plant anyway....See MoreMy little project today!
Comments (5)Hi CC, Yes the new tin pot does look lovely. Some advice going forward since you've said you're a newbie. When watering rosette forms of succulents, like Echeverias, Aeoniums, it's best not to get water in the center of the rosette, as it increases their danger of rotting. Even for less rosette forms like Aloes, Haworthias, & Gasterias the same holds true, best to water around the edge of the pot or outer edge of the plant. Also, those powdery looking leaves like the Echeveria, damage easily when touched & the marks won't go away, so it's best to try to touch those leaves as little as possible & handle those plants by their stems for repotting, etc....See MorePouring cats and dogs
Comments (29)Josh, it was only 28F here last night. Reading your posts makes me and my plants feel like wimps. I brought in my Pachypodiums and Dyckia m-l's last night. I was going to leave them outside with all my other succulents, but relented (panicked) around midnight, and brought them inside. Some of my Echeverias have splotchy leaves this morning, but I'm sure it won't be fatal. During the Great Freeze in January 2007, it got down to 25F for almost twelve hours, that after several previous nights in the high twenties. Nothing was killed, but a large Euphorbia ammak was frozen all along the edges, scarred for life. Several largish Crassula ovata had smaller branches and leaves frozen, but recovered with no obvious damage. I called it Freeze Pruning. Brad...See Moregreenclaws UK, Zone 8a
